Job Description

The QC Dimensional Inspector is responsible for performing dimensional and visual inspections of incoming materials, machined components, fabricated weldments, assemblies, and purchased products to verify compliance with engineering drawings, specifications, and quality requirements. This role supports NOV Hydra Rig's Quality Management System by ensuring only conforming materials are released to production. The inspector also manages inspection equipment calibration, coordinates outsourced calibration services, and serves as a technical liaison between Suppliers, Purchasing, Engineering, Manufacturing, and Quality throughout the inspection process.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Perform receiving inspection of incoming machined, fabricated, manufactured, and purchased components using engineering drawings, specifications, and inspection plans.
  • Conduct dimensional, visual, and mechanical inspections utilizing precision measuring equipment to verify compliance with engineering requirements and applicable standards.
  • Interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T), and product specifications to determine inspection requirements.
  • Document inspection results accurately and maintain complete inspection records in accordance with company quality procedures.
  • Initiate, document, and process Non-Conformance Reports (NCRs) including verification of corrective actions and disposition closure.
  • Coordinate with suppliers to resolve nonconforming material issues and support supplier corrective action activities as required.
  • Perform on-site and off-site inspections when necessary to verify supplier quality and product conformance.
  • Maintain and administer the inspection equipment calibration program, including internal calibration activities and coordination of external calibration services.
  • Verify measuring and inspection equipment remains calibrated and traceable to NIST standards prior to use.
  • Maintain calibration records and ensure compliance with company quality requirements and applicable industry standards.
  • Serve as the primary quality liaison between Suppliers, Purchasing, Engineering, Manufacturing, and Quality to resolve inspection and product quality concerns.
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives by identifying recurring quality issues and recommending corrective or preventive actions.
  • Ensure compliance with all company Health, Safety, Environmental (HSE), and Quality Management System requirements.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum 3–5 years of experience performing receiving, dimensional, or mechanical inspection in a manufacturing or machining environment.
  • Strong understanding of precision dimensional inspection of machined, fabricated, and manufactured components.
  • Proficient in interpreting engineering drawings, blueprints, specifications, and GD&T in accordance with ASME Y14.5.
  • Extensive experience using precision measuring instruments including:
    • Calipers
    • Micrometers
    • Height gauges
    • Dial indicators
    • Bore gauges
    • Thread gauges
    • Surface plates
    • Depth gauges
    • Pin gauges
  • Working knowledge of metrology principles, measurement uncertainty, and dimensional inspection techniques.
  • Experience administering or supporting calibration systems with equipment traceable to NIST standards.
  • Ability to identify, document, and communicate nonconforming conditions with clear technical justification.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to interact professionally with suppliers, engineering, purchasing, and manufacturing personnel.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office applications and electronic quality management or ERP systems.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple inspection priorities while maintaining attention to detail.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently with minimal supervision while contributing effectively as part of a cross-functional team.
