Job Description

Company Overview

Our client is an established and highly respected manufacturer specializing in heavy-duty protective and industrial packaging solutions in Malaysia. With a focus on engineering excellence, cost-efficiency, and sustainability, they design and manufacture critical protective systems—including high-performance corrugated cartons, EPE foam buffering, wooden crates, and advanced pallet configurations. They are seeking an innovative and detail-oriented engineer to join their R&D and business development operations.

Mission

The R&D Packaging Engineer is responsible for conceptualizing, designing, and validating innovative, cost-effective, and highly protective packaging solutions for heavy industrial and commercial applications. This role focuses on optimizing protective performance, reducing logistics footprint, and enhancing sustainability across diverse materials. You will serve as a key technical partner to customers' engineering teams, transforming product protection requirements into physical, manufacturable structural designs.

Key Responsibilities & Activities

1. Structural Packaging Design & Innovation

  • Conceptual Design:

Develop new and optimize existing packaging solutions using multiple materials, including corrugated fiberboard, Expanded Polyethylene (EPE) foam, wooden crates, and wood/plastic pallet systems.

  • Prototyping:

Prepare precise structural drawings, generate 2D/3D CAD layouts, and oversee the assembly of physical mockups and prototypes for customer evaluations.

  • Material Optimization:

Research and evaluate alternative materials and packaging techniques to improve physical impact resistance, minimize environmental impact, and reduce unit costs.

2. Customer Consultation & Load Engineering

  • Technical Collaboration:

Partner closely with customers’ technical and engineering departments to understand their fragile product specifications and design customized protective profiles.

  • Logistics Optimization:

Design packaging to maximize container loading efficiency, stackability, and overall warehouse cube utilization.

  • Technical Advisory:

Support the business development team in client-facing technical discussions, acting as the engineering subject matter expert.

3. Testing, Validation & Quality Assurance

  • Performance Testing:

Plan, conduct, and analyze physical validation tests including drop tests, compression tests, vibration tests, and simulated transit evaluations to guarantee product safety during global transit.

  • First-Article Validation:

Ensure prototype designs are transition-ready and compliant with both customer standards and international transit regulations.

4. Production Integration & Manufacturability

  • DFM (Design for Manufacturing):

Collaborate with internal production and tooling teams to ensure packaging concepts are highly practical, safe, and efficient to fabricate on the shop floor.

  • SOP Collaboration:

Translate approved prototype structures into clear technical specifications to assist production setup and quality control lines.

Requirements

Education & Experience

  • Education:

Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering (Mechanical, Industrial, Materials), Packaging Engineering, Industrial Design, or a related technical discipline.

  • Experience:

1–2 years of hands-on experience in industrial packaging design, structural packaging engineering, or product development within a manufacturing environment. (Fresh graduates with strong academic project portfolios in packaging design are welcome to apply).

Technical & Professional Skills

  • Material Knowledge:

Fundamental understanding of corrugated cardboard properties, EPE foam cushion curve performance, and wooden pallet/crate structural design.

  • Software Competency:

Proven ability to create structural drawings using CAD software (such as AutoCAD, SolidWorks, ArtiosCAD, or equivalent package design software).

  • Testing Familiarity:

Basic understanding of international packaging testing protocols (e.g., ISTA, ASTM standards for drop and compression tests).

Personal Attributes

  • Problem Solving:

Proactive and analytical mindset with a strong mechanical intuition for structural integrity and product protection.

  • Communication:

Strong interpersonal and communication skills to effectively translate technical details to customers, suppliers, and shop-floor technicians.
