
Eaton Research Labs (ERL) focuses on front-end innovation by conducting advanced research that advances the state of the art, drives cross-business impact technologies, and delivers safe, efficient, and reliable power management solutions for Eaton customers. Within this environment, the R&D Lead Engineer supports the research, development, validation and maturation of medium-voltage power systems and related power management technologies. This role contributes to multidisciplinary technology programs involving power systems, insulation technologies, power electronics, system integration, controls, modeling and digital engineering tools.
Working closely with ERL researchers, global technology teams, external research partners and businesses, this role contributes to technology development activities and supports the evaluation, advancement and potential commercialization of innovative technologies aligned with Eaton’s long-term technology and business strategies through technical leadership within assigned technology domains, including simulation, modeling, testing, validation and knowledge generation, while building broader expertise across power systems, insulation technologies, power electronics, controls and related engineering disciplines.
Key Responsibilities:
Technology Development & Validation
• Lead technical activities within assigned technology domains and contribute to the development, analysis, validation and delivery of medium-voltage power systems and power management technologies aligned with project objectives.
• Serve as a technical focal point within one or more technical disciplines, such as insulation systems, power systems, power electronics, controls, system integration, modeling and related enabling technologies, driving simulation, modeling, laboratory testing, prototype evaluation and system-level validation activities.
• Lead technical investigations, data analysis and problem-solving efforts to improve system performance, reliability, manufacturability and application readiness, and communicate technical findings and recommendations to project teams and stakeholders.
• Conduct technology scouting and assess industry trends, emerging technologies, external collaborations, best practices and future opportunities to support technology development and innovation objectives.
• Apply technical insights and lessons learned from research, development and validation activities to support technology advancement, innovation decision-making and future commercialization opportunities.
Innovation & Technology Transfer
• Contribute to next-generation technology development programs aligned with Eaton’s long-term technology and business strategies through technical studies, technology assessments, innovation activities, and evaluation of emerging technologies and future opportunities.
• Collaborate with ERL global teams, Eaton businesses, universities, research institutes and external partners to advance technology development, validation, exploratory research and knowledge generation activities across local and global technology programs.
• Support technology maturation, transfer and future commercialization opportunities through technical analysis, engineering validation and application support.
• Contribute to intellectual property (IP) generation through invention disclosures, technical publications, knowledge sharing and other technical contributions.
PhD in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline is preferred. Master's degree in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline with significant relevant experience may also be considered.
Experience
PhD with 0-5 years of relevant experience, or Master's degree with 5+ years of relevant experience in one or more of the following areas: high-voltage engineering, insulation systems and dielectric technologies, power systems, power electronics, power conversion technologies, modeling and simulation, or related electrical engineering disciplines.
Technical Knowledge and Skills
• Solid understanding of electrical engineering principles and medium-voltage power systems, with technical expertise in one or more technical domains such as insulation systems, dielectric technologies, power electronics, power systems, controls, system integration or related engineering disciplines.
• Knowledge of power conversion, protection and power management technologies, including medium-voltage applications and associated system-level design considerations.
• Familiarity with power conversion technologies and architectures, including AC/DC, DC/DC, DC/AC and related system-level applications.
• Experience with simulation, modeling, analysis, testing and validation methodologies, with familiarity in engineering tools such as MATLAB/Simulink, COMSOL, Python or equivalent platforms.
• Ability to work across multiple technical domains and apply technical knowledge to complex engineering challenges.
• Fluent English communication skills, with the ability to effectively collaborate, influence, and communicate in a global environment.
