Basic Job Functions:

We are seeking a curious, forward-thinking welding professional to join our Innovation team. This role will provide welding expertise to support the development of new products, manufacturing processes, and technologies across NTS. This person will work closely with engineers and cross-functional teams to improve product design and manufacturability, research and evaluate new welding technologies, and develop practical solutions that improve safety, quality, productivity, and cost. The role will support projects from early research and testing through the R&D stage-gate process and eventual implementation by production teams.

  • Partner with structural engineers to improve welded designs and manufacturability
  • Research and evaluate new welding processes, technologies, and automation
  • Develop and execute R&D projects from concept through testing, validation, and implementation
  • Apply welding expertise to investigate technical challenges and develop practical solutions
  • Evaluate opportunities to improve safety, quality, productivity, and cost through welding innovation
  • Document research, test results, technical findings, and recommendations
  • Develop a strong understanding of existing NTS welding processes, products, and manufacturing capabilities
  • Ability to travel for training, visiting vendors, and to other Nucor facilities

Safety is the most important part of all jobs within Nucor; therefore, candidates must be able to demonstrate the ability to initiate, lead, and uphold safety policies, practices, procedures, and housekeeping standards at all times.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Degree or technical education in welding, welding technology, engineering, manufacturing, or a related field; equivalent relevant experience will also be considered
  • Experience with common welding processes, materials, fabrication, and manufacturing practices
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and technical documentation
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills
  • Demonstrated initiative, curiosity, and ability to learn new technologies and processes

Preferred Qualifications:

  • AWS Certified Welding Inspector (CWI), or ability to obtain
  • Experience with AWS D1.1 or other applicable welding codes and standards
  • Experience with WPS/PQR development or welding procedure qualification
  • Experience with automated or robotic welding systems • Experience with structural steel or heavy fabrication
  • Experience with welding process development, testing, experimentation, or R&D • Knowledge of welding metallurgy, weldability, distortion, fatigue, or failure analysis
  • Experience applying data analysis, DOE, or other structured problem-solving methods
