The Chemist II provides technical support for maintenance of business activities within the Industrial Wood business. This role supports existing products through technical problem solving, product stewardship, manufacturing support, and customer issue resolution. The Chemist II works closely with Manufacturing, Quality, Sales, Marketing, Technical Service, Supply Chain, and customers to address technical challenges, support operational needs, and help ensure reliable product performance, customer satisfaction, and business continuity.

This role is not hybrid and will be located at Sherwin-Williams Morikis Global Technology Center located at 6745 Miller Road, Brecksville, OH 44141.
• Support and lead maintenance of business objectives for existing products and customer accounts through technical problem solving and laboratory support.
• Investigate product, manufacturing, and customer-related issues using structured problem-solving methods and determine root causes and corrective actions.
• Execute laboratory testing, product evaluations, reformulations, and product modifications in support of sustaining business activities.
• Develop new products for customers to meet performance and application requirements.
• Coordinate project activities with Manufacturing, Quality, Sales, Marketing, Procurement, Technical Services, and external customers as needed.
• Respond to customer requests, product performance concerns, and manufacturing issues in a timely manner.
• Support manufacturing plants and facilities through troubleshooting, process optimization, product qualification activities, and technical consultation.
• Maintain accurate technical documentation, laboratory notebooks, test reports, product records, and investigation summaries.
• Assist in identifying opportunities for process improvements that enhance product quality, consistency, operational efficiency, and customer satisfaction.
• Meet established turnaround expectations for customer support activities, product modifications, and technical investigations.
• Maintain safe laboratory inventories, equipment, panels, and supplies required to support ongoing operations.
• Share technical knowledge and support training of laboratory personnel as needed.
• Adhere to company safety standards at all times.
• Perform additional duties as assigned.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
• Must be legally authorized to work in the country of employment without needing sponsorship for employment work visa status now or in the future (e.g., OPT, CPT, H1B, EB-1,etc.)
• Bachelor’s degree in a Science, Technology, Engineering or Math field.
• Must be at least 18 years of age.
• 3 Years of paint and coatings experience
• Computer knowledge and data analysis
• Excellent math knowledge
• Experience conducting or being involved in laboratory testing, product evaluations, and technical investigations.
• Demonstrated problem solving.
• Effective written and verbal communication skills.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
• Degree in Polymers and Coatings
• Wood coating experience.
• Formulation knowledge of UV/LED/EB Cured coatings
• Experience in industrial or OEM coating formulation.
• Experience working with waterborne coating technologies.
• Familiarity with DFSS, Lean Six Sigma, Kepner-Tregoe, or other structured problem-solving methodologies.
• Experience supporting commercialized products in a manufacturing and customer-facing environment.
• Experience working cross-functionally with Manufacturing, Quality, Sales, Marketing, and Technical Service teams.
• Experience with customer application lines (e.g., curtain coaters, vacuum coaters, roll coaters, and other OEM application equipment).
Travel Requirements: 15%
