Department: Respiratory Therapy

Shift/schedule: Full Time (36 hrs/wk)

GENERAL SUMMARY

Works under the supervision of the Manager of Respiratory Therapy. The RCP III's primary job function is to provide high quality respiratory care delivery to the SOMC patient population in accordance with hospital policy. Collects vitals, chief complaints, pain assessment, and documents past medical history as needed.Phones prescriptions to pharmacies as needed, operates medical equipment, and performs patient education. Performs other duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS

Education:

• High School Diploma or successful completion of an equivalent High School Exam Required

• Graduate of a Respiratory Therapy program accredited by CoARC or other deemed accrediting body.

Licensure:

• RT(OH) required

• RRT required

• BLS within 90 days of hire required

• NRP within 6 months of hire required

Experience:

• Work and/or educational experience that promoted group/team working relations is preferred.

• Minimum three years post graduate experience in the practice of respiratory care, two years specific to acute care delivery and one to two years of tertiary level respiratory care experience preferred.

JOB SPECIFIC DUTIES AND PERFORMANCE EXPECTATIONS

The following is a summary of the major job duties of this job. Other duties may be performed, both major and minor, which are not mentioned below. Specific activities may change from time to time.

1. Delivers medical gas administration through various types of devices.

2. Administers humidification, aerosols and aerosolized medications.

3. Performs postural drainage and chest physical therapy.

4. Delivers hyperinflation therapy (i.e. IPPB, IS).

5. Demonstrates for patient education the use of home treatment systems (i.e. Peak Flow, Spacer) .

6. Collects and reports patient information as an aid to planning of respiratory treatment programs.

7. Performs nasal tracheal and artificial suctioning for sputum samples and documents as appropriate.

8. Draws and collects blood for arterial sampling and documents as appropriate.

9. Conducts pulmonary function testing for bedside spirometry and peak flow assessments.

10. Performs endotracheal intubation/extubation, manages natural and artificial airways, and supervises RCP I and II with management of natural and artificial airways.

11. Sets up monitor and manage noninvasive and invasive equipment used for ventilatory support.

12. Performs tests to determine the patient's ability to be liberated from mechanical ventilation.

13. Uses assessment and documentation of patient progress to evaluate patient response to therapy.

14. Pre-cleans, decontaminates and transports contaminated instruments according to policy

15. Performs intermediate-level disinfection and/ or high level disinfection per the Instructions for Use (IFU) by the manufacture. This includes ensuring the scopes or probes used within the department are cleaned, disinfected, maintained and stored per the IFU’s.

16. Collects and documents patient vitals, chief complaints, pain assessment, past medical, family and social histories as needed.

17. Logs and updates medication lists for patients as needed.

18. Reviews and handles ERX requests with the provider's direction as needed. Handles failed and error electronic prescriptions as needed.

19. Other job duties as assigned.
