The Range Professional will perform tasks related to research support in agriculture, ecology and natural resources, education, outreach, and development at the Santa Rita Experimental Range (SRER). The Range Professional will reside in University of Arizona-provided housing at the SRER, Florida Work Station headquarters, located in the foothills of the Santa Rita Mountains. As a condition of employment, it is mandatory for the employee to live in the University of Arizona- provided housing located on-site at the SRER headquarters.

This position requires a flexible schedule, including evening and weekend hours as needed for events. Schedule adjustments may be made as appropriate to accommodate these responsibilities.

It is a requirement to reside onsite in order to provide day-to-day support and 24-hour emergency services as needed.

Duties & Responsibilities

• Assists the Southern Arizona Experiment Station (SAES) Director and SRER Director for Research to support leaders of research and outreach projects by understanding their research needs, communicating the capacity of the SRER to meet those needs, and developing Range Use Agreements.
• Provides support for research, teaching, and extension programs.
• Serves in a collaborative role with Student Conservation Association regarding SRER related projects.
• Works with the SAES Director to support and lead community engagement initiatives to promote the SRER’s mission, research, and educational programs to local communities, schools, and professional groups.
• Represents the SRER at meetings, workshops, and outreach events, increasing visibility and fostering partnerships with academic, governmental, and private organizations.
• Collaborates with communication teams to highlight SRER research achievements through newsletters, social media, and press releases.
• Communicates with SRER users about safely and restricted use situations such as wildland fires and firearm use.
• Interprets and enforces rules and regulations for SRER operations with support from the SAES Director.
• Supervises and coordinates all SRER volunteer functions including recruitment, events and basic duties.
• Develops, plans, schedules, monitors, and participates in work projects and activities such as rangeland inventory and monitoring, project development and support for SRER-related research, infrastructure installation, range gauge monitoring program, renovations, range improvements, fundraising events, and SRER education and outreach activities.
• Maintains a safe working environment and follows all University safety protocols, including field, vehicle, and equipment safety.
• Oversees cabin and bunkhouse operations at the headquarters area, including reservations, contracts, insurance documentation, revenue collection, safety, security, and custodial duties.
• Assists with trash collection across the SRER and cross-trains with the SRER Maintenance Mechanic II on rain gauge monitoring, including the incorporation of new digital recording processes.
• Works collaboratively with the SRER Trade Maintenance Mechanic II and other staff to support SRER infrastructure and operations.
• Participates in professional development opportunities related to rangeland management, research support, and outreach.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs):

• Ability to live in University-provided on-site housing.
• Must
  be able to work well independently and with others while safely performing
  duties outside in all weather conditions.
• Working knowledge of rangeland plants.
• Knowledge of horticulture and agriculture.

Physical Requirement:

• Must
  be able to lift, move and transport up to 50 pounds.

Minimum Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent advanced learning attained through professional level experience.
• Minimum 3 years of related work experience or equivalent combination of education and work experience.
• Ability to drive according to the University Fleet Safety Policy

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience working in natural resources.
• Experience working with equipment, power tools, and a variety of vehicle types, including UTV’s and 4x4 vehicles.

Notice of Availability of the Annual Security and Fire Safety Report
In compliance with the Jeanne Clery Campus Safety Act (Clery Act), each year the University of Arizona releases an Annual Security Report (ASR) for each of the University’s campuses. These reports disclose information including Clery crime statistics for the previous three calendar years and policies, procedures, and programs the University uses to keep students and employees safe, including how to report crimes or other emergencies and resources for crime victims. As a campus with residential housing facilities, the Main Campus ASR also includes a combined Annual Fire Safety report with information on fire statistics and fire safety systems, policies, and procedures.
