Road & Rail Services is urgently hiring a Railcar Repair Technician / Welder for our Superior Township, Michigan operation.

This is a full-time union position for someone who enjoys hands-on mechanical work and wants to build a career in the railroad industry. You'll inspect, maintain, and repair freight railcars using welding, cutting, fabrication, and mechanical repair skills.

We are interested in candidates from a variety of skilled-trade backgrounds. Direct railcar experience is helpful but not required for candidates who bring relevant welding, fabrication, industrial maintenance, diesel repair, trailer repair, or heavy-equipment experience.

What You'll Be Doing

Your day-to-day responsibilities may include:

  • Inspecting railcars for structural damage, wear, defects, and mechanical problems
  • Identifying repairs that can be completed within the facility's authorized scope of work
  • Performing stick welding, cutting, grinding, fabrication, and mechanical repairs
  • Completing repairs in accordance with customer requirements and applicable AAR specifications
  • Using grinders, welding machines, cutting equipment, pipe wrenches, pry bars, ratchets, chipping tools, and other industrial equipment
  • Lubricating and servicing railcar components as required
  • Documenting inspections, defects, and completed repairs
  • Reporting or escalating repairs that cannot be completed at the facility
  • Operating authorized equipment such as utility vehicles, tractors, pickup trucks, and vans
  • Keeping tools and work areas clean, organized, and ready for safe operation
  • Following railroad, customer, and company safety requirements at all times

Skilled-Trade Experience We're Looking For

We encourage you to apply if you have previous hands-on experience in one or more of these areas:

  • Welding
  • Metal fabrication
  • Railcar repair or inspection
  • Industrial maintenance
  • Mechanical repair
  • Diesel mechanics
  • Trailer repair
  • Heavy-equipment maintenance
  • Other related skilled mechanical trades

Stick-welding experience is strongly preferred. Candidates with experience performing welds in the 4G or 5G positions are especially encouraged to apply.

You should also be comfortable following detailed work instructions, identifying mechanical or structural problems, and completing repairs with a strong focus on safety and quality.

Outdoor & Physical Work

This is not a shop or desk position. You will work around railcars, industrial tools, and heavy equipment, primarily outdoors.

Team members must be able to work in changing weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, and wind. The job also requires regular standing, walking, bending, kneeling, reaching, climbing, and handling tools throughout the workday.

Employees must be comfortable working around noise, moving equipment, and active railroad operations and must properly wear all required personal protective equipment.

Reliable and consistent attendance is essential.

Pay, Union Position & Benefits
