Hours: Friday, Saturday and Sunday 7:00am - 7:30pm

Must be flexible with work hours to meet department needs. Must be dependable, accountable and cooperative. Assists with providing safe, age appropriate care to the patient by performing all exams provided by the department according to department procedures. Has the knowledge and ability to properly and safely obtain a quality diagnostic study. Responsible for performing a wide variety of technical procedures requiring independent judgement, ingenuity and initiative in the utilization of the equipment for the diagnosis and/or treatment of diseases. Able to independently perform job functions. Sets up the equipment to provide imaging service and positions patient for the procedure. Acts as a clinical coordinator for imaging students. Fills out student rotation evaluations honestly and ethically. Ability to provide constructive criticism to students during their rotation. Functions as a clinical instructor for students rotating through the Medical Imaging department.

Core Responsibilities and Essential Functions

Patient Care

  • Obtains complete clinical history, gathers examination data, and assesses for contraindicating conditions.
  • Follows established procedures for administering contrast media to ensure patient safety and prevent complications.
  • Ensures all studies have proper patient identification and appropriate right/left markers.
  • Reviews radiographic images for clinically acceptable results and releases patients.
  • Responds to emergency situations; restocks crash cart and maintains life‑support equipment.
  • Assists technologists in all imaging modalities when needed.
  • Observes patient condition and evaluates when physician intervention is necessary to prevent deterioration.
  • Verifies two unique patient identifiers and correct clinical order prior to performing procedures.
  • Ensures patient privacy, comfort, and dignity throughout the exam.
  • Demonstrates competence in selecting appropriate procedures, equipment, supplies, and techniques based on patient age.
  • Organizes schedule, time, and priorities to complete required activities within designated time frames.
  • Follows physician instructions during procedures and exams.
  • Uses critical thinking skills.
  • Asks clarifying questions and seeks clarification on ambiguous orders.
  • Understands, demonstrates, and documents pre‑procedural verification and Time Out processes.
  • Demonstrates understanding of pre‑ and post‑procedural care.
  • Prepares patients for procedures.
  • Demonstrates understanding of sterile technique.
  • Maintains competency with venipuncture, where applicable.

Equipment

  • Adjusts technique to ensure the lowest possible radiation dose while maintaining image quality.
  • Reports malfunctioning equipment to supervisor or service provider for timely correction.
  • Cleans, disinfects, and maintains equipment per infection control policy and department schedule.
  • Operates all aspects of the imaging system.
  • Operates all radiographic equipment safely and competently, ensuring equipment is not abused and remains in good working order.

Education and Communication

  • Clearly explains the purpose and nature of exams using AIDET to reduce anxiety and improve cooperation.
  • Ensures patient questions, concerns, and contraindications are addressed; notifies physician when necessary.
  • Participates in orientation and training of departmental employees.
  • Provides preparatory instructions and procedure explanations to patients.
  • Ensures documentation is concise, legible, and uses precise terminology.
  • Reads work email daily and follows through with assignments.
  • Completes mandatory departmental and hospital‑wide education without prompting.

Quality Control

  • Consistently produces high‑quality images, including appropriate collimation, shielding, technique selection, penetration, and positioning.
  • Ensures equipment is fully operational before each use by checking calibration and for deficiencies.
  • Sends all studies to PACS and prints CDs as necessary; ensures all exams are complete in RIS with accurate labeling, orientation, and notes.
  • Prints and scans after‑hours teleradiography studies into PACS when applicable.
  • Checks for prior exams and ensures they are loaded and properly labeled before sending to PACS.

Operations

  • Restocks linens and supplies; maintains Diagnostic Imaging Services in a clean and orderly condition.
  • Transports and positions patients; assists them on and off the procedure table.
  • Performs patient charging activities on the day services are rendered.
  • Applies shielding, supportive, and immobilization devices appropriately.
  • Willingly provides knowledge and assistance to others as needed and when time allows.
  • Performs clerical and support duties when necessary to ensure continuity and quality of services.
  • Keeps supervisor informed of responsibilities, issues, and potential problems.
  • Maintains productivity levels consistent with coworkers.
  • Maintains Joint Commission and other regulatory standards.
  • Transfers and retrieves images on the PACS system.
  • Takes call when necessary.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Complies with all WellStar Health System policies, standards of work, and code of conduct.


Required Minimum Education

  • Completion of an accredited Radiologic Technology program.

Required Minimum Licenses & Certifications

  • ARRT‑R — ARRT Radiography
  • BLS — Basic Life Support
  • or ARC‑BLS — American Red Cross Basic Life Support
  • or BLS‑I — Basic Life Support Instructor
