Join the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV) in keeping Florida’s roads safe. As part of the FHP Regional Communications Center team, you’ll contribute to a safer Florida by supporting radio operations for state troopers of the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) which helps millions of residents and visitors every year.

This position is responsible for assisting in implementing and maintaining telecommunications systems, microwave systems and land mobile radio systems for the Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles, Division of Florida Highway Patrol. This position requires occasional travel and non-standard (after 5PM or weekend) working hours.

The incumbent in this position will be responsible for the following duties:

  • Provide technical assistance to field personnel with radio system, equipment, and/or operational problems. Recommend test procedures and corrective actions.
  • Provide support of technical problems, requiring knowledge of Radio Frequency (RF) engineering principles.
  • Oversee vendor maintenance of contract work and provide corrective action as needed.
  • Responsible for testing radio code, radio programming software and related items.
  • Provide training assistance for radio users of agency communications systems and related equipment.
  • Responsible for area management and security of FHP agency specific encryption keys.
  • Advisor in installation planning as related to the radio and related equipment.
  • Assist with communications design and provide implementation and operational support for the Florida Highway Patrol.
  • Assist with preparing detailed system and equipment procurement specifications and documentation to enable the Department to purchase equipment and service as required.
  • Provide assistance to the lead communications engineer as required.
  • Provide routine maintenance and inspection reports on MCV and SAT systems.
  • Respond/Deploy to Mutual Aid / Disaster Incidents and details.
  • Responsible for development and plans for future enhancements to disaster response communications systems.
  • Perform research and evaluation of new telecommunications technology to keep the Department aware of the availability of new products to enhance and make operations more efficient.
  • Represent FHP on the Regional Domestic Security Task Force (RDSTF) on radio interoperability issues.
  • Serve as an agency liaison by interfacing with area government entities to provide promotion and support of communications interoperability.
  • Provide coordination with other public safety agencies regarding joint operations related to law enforcement communications.
  • Perform other related duties as they pertain to telecommunications, budget preparation, and procurement activities and lease agreements.

  • FCC license.

Job Related Requirements

  • The position you are applying for is subject to a Level 2 background check, along with Criminal Justice Information System (CJIS) clearance, to include a fingerprint-based check of the criminal records of the FBI, as a condition of employment pursuant to Chapter 110.1127, 435 and 943, Florida Statutes. Please note that, since this position requires CJIS clearance, the Department will have access to all of an applicant’s criminal and juvenile delinquency records, even those that have been sealed or expunged.
  • This position requires a JTF-SLERS background check.
  • This position requires the incumbent to have and maintain a valid driver’s license in good standing. This means there can be no cancellations, suspensions, or revocations for a minimum of three years prior to employment and for the duration of employment. There can be no more than three chargeable crashes or any violation of Chapter 316, Florida Statutes, during any consecutive three-year period prior to and throughout employment.This position may require the selected applicant to be on call.

General Information

  • To be considered for this position, applicant responses to qualifying questions must be clearly reflected within the employment history. Software systems, actual work experience, and years of employment history must be clearly defined, or the application may not be considered.

  • FLHSMV employees are paid once a month on the last workday of each month. All state employees are required to participate in the direct deposit program pursuant to s. 110.113 Florida Statutes.
