Job Description

OF DUTIES

The Radiation therapist is a professional trained worker with knowledge and skills to accurately administer low or high-energy x-rays and electrons for therapeutic purposes. Radiation therapist associated with clinical oncologist, medical physicist and other member of the team, makes radiotherapy service more effective.

MAIN DUTIES RESPONSIBILITIES

1.Understands and carries out the application of ionizing radiation in medicine in line with Vision and mission, philosophy, Goals and objective that suit the scope of the Radiotherapy services and the hospital.

2.Understands the service organization structure.

3.Attends meetings held by the services in order to discuss issues and matters pertaining to the operation of the service.

4.Delivers planned courses of radiotherapy with minimum supervision.

5.Ensure safety of the patient before, during and after procedure by providing the necessary care and constant monitoring of patient’s conditions.

6.Adhere strictly to rules and regulations on radiation protection to assurance of the safety of patients and other personnel.

7.Maintains the safety policy and ensures that all accidents/incidents are reported to the Head of Services and documented.

8.Ensure that all technical details processing from CT Simulation stage, planning stage, until daily treatment delivery at Linac to the patients are accurate and precise per planned. e.g. dose delivery, fractionation, field size, isocenter, shielding , bolus, wedges, tongue depressor, BDS etc

9.During CT Simulation (real-time imaging), work in close association with consultants, radiologist (if necessary) and medical physicist. Always provide opinion / assistance regarding of patient’s immobilization, comfort and the most reproducibility of treatment fields.

10.Liaise with Diagnostic Imaging radiographers / Staff Nurse for any radiotherapy patients who need to have CT Simulation with contrast.

11.Determine and set the CT Simulation parameters to cover tumour area, check scans and transfer to treatment planning system for the consultant and medical physicist.

12.Radiation therapists are responsible for the quality of the scan images and must provide the correct view of specific body structures or systems.

13.Radiation therapists are responsible to process treatment preparation (RTT 1st check) after plan is completed by physicist.

14.During every procedure of Radiotherapy, they assist patient by:

  • explaining the procedures that is to be

done to the patient,

  • answering questions as fully as possible,
  • comforting the patient and provide

emotional support,

  • positioning the patient and equipment

correctly,

  • ensuring that the patient, all staff and

visitors are protected from radiation,

  • monitoring the patient during procedure,
  • contributing to patient education,
  • operating the equipment with full

responsible.

15.Establishes and develops effective communication with all disciplines, patients and relatives, to achieve optimal patient’s satisfaction.

16.Conducts visits on patients in the wards to ascertain for other additional needs; talk to patient/family member.

17.Prepare patient’s charge form for cashier and check charges are charged accordingly for completeness.

ADDITIONAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES IN THE SPECIFIC AREAS

1.Maintain a clean, tidy and safe environment in the CT Simulation Room, Mould Room and Linac Treatment Room.

2.Maintenance of daily/weekly/monthly QA/simulation/treatment record, report, patient treatment summary, patient satisfactory survey and statistic for future reference.

3.Responsible for keeping patients’ treatment records in proper order during simulation and treatment away from unauthorized people.

4.Contributes suggestion in periodic revising and upgrading Radiotherapy Policies and Procedures.

5.Always wear personnel dose monitoring badges during work.

6.Checks LINAC/CT room disposable / stock level eg. Thermoplastic, surgical supplies etc.

7.Performs any other duties as ordered by the Head of Services.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED

  • Certificate / Diploma / Degree in Radiotherapy qualification
  • Able to communicate fluently and write in English language and Bahasa Malaysia

EXPERIENCE REQUIRED

One year experience in Radiation treatment delivery and CT Simulation. Experience working in hospital based.
