Work Shift

Days (United States of America)Responsible for accurate administration of ionizing radiation to a prescribed area according to the prescribed dose. Educates and informs patients and their families in all aspects of their radiation treatments and refers them to RN, PA, RD, or MD as indicated. Accurately maintains daily treatment schedule for each patient in assigned area. Verifies the accuracy of daily treatment delivery, and charge capture in MOSAIQ system.

Major Job Functions

The following is a summary of the major essential functions of this job. The incumbent may perform other duties, both major and minor, that are not mentioned below. In addition, specific functions may change from time to time:

  • Administers correct daily treatment dose as prescribed by Radiation Oncologist

  • Conduct most treatments independently, in accordance with the long-term treatment plan and under the general direction of the patient’s physician

  • Positions patients for treatment with accuracy according to prescription

  • Checks therapy equipment to ensure proper operation and notify ancillary staff of issues timely manner

  • Performs mold room duties and demonstrates use of equipment and safety procedures

  • Cuts, pours, and mounts 4 sets of various blocks

  • Performs basic simulations including Ct/Simulations with little or no assistance

  • Performs basic Dosimetry hand calculations for POP fields, blocked and unblocked

  • Efficiently schedules and maintains daily patient treatment schedule and assists others when feasible

  • Observes and reassure patients during treatment and report to clinic staff as necessary

  • Instructs trains and supervises Radiation Therapy students

  • Other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications

The following qualifications, or equivalents, are the minimum requirements necessary to perform the essential functions of this job:

Education and Formal Training

  • School of Radiation Therapy graduate required

  • Board certified OR registry eligible by the ARRT in Radiation Therapy required

  • Candidate is expected to pass the ARRT exam within 1-year of employment. Failure to meet this requirement may result in demotion status; probation; and/or termination of employment as a Radiation Therapist

  • CPR certification is required

Work Experience

  • None

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required

  • Thorough knowledge of anatomy, physiology, and clinical oncology

  • Understanding of radiation physics, radiation safety, and basic dosimetry theories

  • Understanding of safe and proper operation of linear accelerators and simulator equipment

  • Ability to follow complex written and verbal instructions setting up patients for radiation therapy treatments

  • Ability to work with little supervision and efficiently maintain daily appointment schedule

  • Ability to communicate with patients from various socio/economic backgrounds and coping abilities, physicians, nurses, and other staff members

  • Knowledge of growth and development and understand the range of treatment needed for all age groups

  • Provides care based on the patients’ developmental needs

  • Understanding of policies regarding Corporate Compliance issues and understands responsibility to report cases fraud and/or abuse

Physical Requirements

  • Much standing or walking

  • Significant bending and lifting required

  • High visual acuity needed to assess portal images, review documentation, computer work, block fabrication and adjustment

  • Good audio perception to hear verbal orders, monitor patient audibly and visually during treatments

  • Ability to read and comprehend technical information

  • Works with equipment that produces radiation and/or radioactive materials

  • Works primarily with adult cancer patients, HIV patients and terminally ill patients

  • Possible contact with infectious blood or body fluids

  • Ability to work under stressful situations
