Job Description

Radiation Safety Officer (RSO) – 1st Shift

Clean Harbors is seeking a first shift Radiation Safety Officer (RSO). The RSO is responsible for providing direction and support for the facility’s radiation safety program, along with general Health & Safety (H&S) support for assigned operations. This role provides guidance to management and direction to personnel on implementing Health & Safety programs.

The RSO will promote continuous safety improvement and serve as the key radiation safety technical expert for the company. This position will also support broader H&S initiatives including safety audits and inspections, record keeping, industrial hygiene monitoring, equipment inspections, safety performance tracking and reporting, training, incident investigations, and program development.

Salary: $98,160 to $147,240 based on experience, with opportunity for a 15% bonus

Responsibilities

  • Provide radiation consultation services across divisions
  • Work closely with managers and personnel to address health and safety concerns and drive program implementation
  • Audit compliance with company policies, programs, procedures, and facility permits
  • Manage air monitoring and employee exposure assessment programs
  • Identify needs for new or updated health and safety programs and assist in development, especially for radiation safety
  • Participate in Health & Safety Committees and attend operations meetings to review concerns and support project planning
  • Advise and represent the company during regulatory actions
  • Review and develop work plans and site-specific safety plans
  • Conduct on-site health and safety audits and inspections
  • Manage safety equipment inspection and testing programs
  • Oversee injury and accident reporting, investigations, and follow-up
  • Support preparation of safety work plans, site-specific safety and health plans, and evaluation checklists
  • Manage and deliver employee safety training programs
  • Respond to emergency situations and provide H&S support during incidents
  • Report accidents, incidents, and safety concerns in a timely manner, including weekly reporting to management

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in natural or physical science, health physics, radiological sciences, nuclear medicine, or nuclear engineering
  • Completion of a structured educational program with classroom training specific to RSO responsibilities
  • Strong knowledge of Federal and State Health & Safety regulations
  • Ability to travel up to 10%
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access)
  • Strong communication, writing, and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities, make independent decisions, and proactively identify and solve H&S issues
