Job Description

The Department of Radiation Oncology and Applied Sciences (DROAS) at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center seeks applications for a full time radiation oncologist to serve at practice locations in Lebanon, NH, and St. Johnsbury, VT. Applicants with interest in brachytherapy are encouraged to apply and would join an established brachytherapy program.

DROAS is a member of the Dartmouth Cancer Center (DCC), one of the original NCI-designated cancer centers, and the Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth College.

Boasting ACR accreditation, DROAS is a long-standing member of NRG/RTOG (Lead Academic Participating Site) and participant of Alliance & ECOG-ACRIN (full members). The current faculty includes multiple physician-scientists with wet & dry labs. Staffing includes 12 physicians, 7 physicists, 10 dosimetrists, 9 nurses, 28 RTTs, & shared secretarial and administrative support. DROAS has a fully ACGME-accredited medical residency program and a CAMPEP-accredited medical physics residency program.

Candidates must be BE/BC in Radiation Oncology and have a strong commitment to academic cancer care. The Radiation Oncologist's duties include confirming diagnoses, determining the appropriate treatments, and conducting radiation therapy. The provider will work closely with our experienced radiation oncology team which, includes ABR certified radiation oncologists and physicists. The successful candidate must have adequate clinical and interpersonal skills as part of a collegial, collaborative, and multi-disciplinary team. This position includes opportunities for research collaboration with faculty at the DCC, Dartmouth College, Geisel School of Medicine, Thayer School of Engineering graduate program in medical physics, and The Dartmouth Institute. Faculty rank at the Geisel School of Medicine is commensurate with qualifications.

Responsibilities

The candidate will serve as generalist radiation oncologist. State-of- the-art technology including MRI Linear accelerator (ViewRay), Varian HDR and Vision RT, is part of the armamentarium of treatment delivery available through DROAS. Career development for the successful candidate is a high priority of our leadership. The Physician is responsible for supervising and providing necessary and desirable medical care within the Physician’s specialty to Dartmouth-Hitchcock patients, consistent with the policies and procedures of DHC, the facility at which care is rendered, and the directions of the Service Line Leader or his/her designee.

If the Physician’s specialty is such that call coverage is required, it is expected that the Physician will rotate call coverage with those physicians and allied health professionals in his or her specialty (as applicable) so that each provider, including the Physician, has a comparable amount of on call time during nights, weekends, and holidays for providing coverage outside of standard business hours. Parties expect that while on call, physician shall remain in close proximity as directed by department chair or designee. In addition to the Physician’s clinical responsibilities, the Physician will spend sufficient and reasonable time on administrative and record-keeping matters pertaining to the Physician’s medical practice.

Radiation Oncologist Core Responsibilities and Requirements:

  • Conducting tests and examinations to confirm diagnoses.
  • Executing radiation treatments such as external beam radiotherapy including intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT), Image-guided radiation therapy (IGRT), and stereotactic treatments.
  • Developing treatment plans that comprise the appropriate therapeutic techniques and drug dosages to be administered.
  • Consistently monitoring patients' progress.
  • Providing pharmacological treatment and suggesting appropriate lifestyle changes.
  • Prior experience treating and diagnosing cancer patients.
  • Adequate knowledge of radiation therapy procedures and techniques.
  • Effective verbal and written communication abilities.
  • A compassionate and empathetic personality.
  • Ability to practice on a per diem “as-needed basis” across several locations in New Hampshire and/or Vermont.

Required Licensure/Certifications

    • Board Certified/ Board Eligible in Radiation Oncology
    • Must obtain and maintain a medical license in the State of NH and the State of VT
