Job Description

The Radiation and Decontamination Monitor is responsible for radiation measurement and decontamination in assigned area and provide guidance as appropriate to Decontamination Operators and Decontamination Helpers.

This position is deemed a Nuclear Energy Worker (NEW). A Nuclear Energy Worker (NEW) is defined by the Nuclear Safety and Control Act as a person who is required, in the course of the person’s business, or occupation in connection with a nuclear substance or nuclear facility to perform duties in such circumstances that there is a reasonable probability that the person may receive a dose of radiation that is greater than the prescribed limit for the general public (1 mSv per year for the whole body).

Key Responsibilities

Performs the necessary radiation checks as well as the decontamination of facilities and equipment as required. Responsible for source checks of all low level alarms, hand and foot monitors and contamination monitors in the active area and ensure all radiation and contamination equipment is properly calibrated.

Will report unusual conditions in respect to radiation, contamination or safety to Senior Radiation and Contamination Monitor or Supervisor. Reads and accurately records radiation dosimeter results. Monitors movements of active packages and waste into and out of production facilities for radiation and contamination including situations where potential hazards exist. Responsibility for sign-offs on Process Control Records and Releases as required and for operation, radiation and contamination control and housekeeping of assigned area. Position is classified as Nuclear Energy Worker (NEW).

Qualifications

  • Minimum grade 12 with at least one-year experience as a Decontamination Operator.
  • Familiarity with operating contamination/radiation detection instruments, decontamination and disposal techniques, radiation hazards and safety control procedures.

Skills and Competencies

  • Ability to maintain records and perform routine calculations with respect to radiation and contamination.
  • Must be competent, and confident to respond quickly to unusual situations and take charge in emergency situations
  • Excellent Communication skills required

Additional Requirements

  • Availability to work the required shift(s) and overtime
  • Lift and carry up to 5 kgs on a frequent basis
  • Good manual dexterity and grip strength
  • Push/pull carts with a force of up to 25kgs on an occasional basis
  • Wear a respirator for potentially several hours at a time
  • This position requires the successful completion of a vision screening and hearing test as a pre-employment condition
  • Training Required: Must complete all required training and certification as a Nuclear Energy Worker
