This exciting position works directly with the local Aboriginal community, providing compassionate, culturally safe therapeutic support around gambling and alcohol and other drug concerns. In this role, you will empower people to build resilience, strengthen wellbeing, and achieve positive life outcomes through peer support case management and community engagement.

GEGAC is an Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisation based in Bairnsdale Victoria. Consisting of about 200 staff, GEGAC is a Not-for-Profit organisation that delivers holistic services in the areas of Primary Health, Social Services, Elders & Disability and Early Childhood Education.

GEGAC advocates for the self-determination of the Aboriginal community by prioritising services that enhance social, emotional, and spiritual wellbeing, with culture at the heart of everything we do.

Position Purpose

The Quaranook and AOD Peer Support Worker will provide culturally safe, trauma-informed outreach, community engagement and early intervention. The position focuses on building trusted relationships with individuals, families and community members, while providing practical support, education, advocacy, case coordination and referral pathways.

This is a dual role, combining AOD peer support, community engagement and prevention activities as part of the Quaranook Gambling Prevention Program. The position provides support and activities relating to reducing gambling and AOD harm, improving overall social and emotional wellbeing and promoting connection to culture, family and community.

Key Selection Criteria

  • Demonstrated understanding of gambling and AOD issues and the impacts on individuals, families and communities.
  • Knowledge of AOD treatment pathways and gambling support services.
  • Knowledge of harm minimisation, trauma informed and recovery-oriented practice.
  • Understanding of Aboriginal Social and Emotional Wellbeing principles and culturally safe practice.
  • Demonstrated ability to engage and build rapport with Aboriginal individuals, families and community.
  • Willingness to facilitating and planning cultural and community programs.
  • Strong communication, advocacy and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with key stakeholders
  • Comprehensive experience in computer systems, electronic client data bases, literacy and ability to maintain confidential records.

Qualifications and Registrations Requirement (Essential or Desirable).

  • Valid Victorian driver’s licence ESSENTIAL
  • Training certificate in Alcohol and Other Drugs, Community Services, Mental Health, Social Work, or related field, or willingness to obtain ESSENTIAL
  • A satisfactory Working with Children Check and Fit2Work Police Check ESSENTIAL
  • A person of Aboriginal and or Torres Strait Islander background DESIRABLE
  • Proof of COVID-19 vaccinated to align with GEGAC requirements ESSENTIAL
