Role Overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a recently qualified Quantity Surveyor to join DYWIDAG's Commercial Team. Working across our Repair & Strengthening, Structural Health Monitoring (SHM), and Geotechnical businesses, the successful candidate will support both the pre-contract and post-contract commercial functions of the organisation.

This role offers excellent exposure to a diverse range of infrastructure projects, including bridge strengthening, structural monitoring, geotechnical investigations, instrumentation and monitoring, and specialist construction works. The successful candidate will be responsible for preparing competitive and commercially robust tenders, whilst also supporting the financial management and commercial delivery of live projects.

The role is primarily based in Bury but will require occasional attendance at our Southam and London offices, together with periodic visits to customer sites and project locations.

Key Responsibilities

Pre-Contract Activities

• Review Invitations to Tender (ITT), specifications, drawings and supporting documentation.
• Prepare detailed estimates and pricing submissions from first principles.
• Obtain and evaluate quotations from subcontractors and suppliers.
• Develop labour, plant, material and subcontract cost build-ups.
• Identify project risks and opportunities and incorporate these into tender submissions.
• Assist in the preparation of programmes, methodologies and commercial submissions.
• Ensure tender submissions are completed accurately and submitted on time.
• Maintain comprehensive records and supporting documentation for all estimates and bids.
• Liaise with operational, technical and engineering teams to develop competitive proposals.

Commercial Management of Live Projects

• Prepare and submit monthly applications for payment.
• Assess the value of work completed and monitor project performance against budget.
• Manage subcontractor and supplier accounts, including payment assessments and certification.
• Prepare, negotiate and agree variations and compensation events.
• Support project teams with contract administration and commercial advice.
• Produce Cost Value Reconciliations (CVRs) for larger projects.
• Monitor project costs, revenue and forecast margins.
• Assist in the preparation and management of project budgets and forecasts.
• Support the management of contractual notices and documentation.
• Contribute to project reviews and financial reporting processes.

Stakeholder Management

• Build strong working relationships with clients, subcontractors and suppliers.
• Work closely with project managers, engineers and operational teams.
• Participate in internal project reviews and commercial meetings.
• Provide commercial support across multiple business units and project teams.

Person Specification

Essential

• Degree qualified in Quantity Surveying or a related commercial discipline.
• Recently qualified Quantity Surveyor or early-career commercial professional.
• Strong numerical and analytical skills.
• Good understanding of construction contracts and commercial principles.
• Proficient in Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Office applications.
• Excellent attention to detail and organisational skills.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Full UK driving licence.
• Willingness to travel occasionally to sites and other company locations.

Desirable

• Experience working within civil engineering, infrastructure, rail, structural repair, monitoring, or geotechnical sectors.
• Knowledge of NEC forms of contract.
• Experience preparing estimates and cost plans.
• Working towards or membership of RICS, ICES or a similar professional body.
• Familiarity with CVRs, applications for payment and variation management.

Subcontractor and Supplier Management

Cost Value Reconciliations (CVRs)

• Monthly CVRs completed accurately and issued within agreed reporting deadlines.
• Forecast cost and revenue positions maintained with minimal variance.

Project Profitability

• Projects delivered at or above approved gross margin targets.
• Early identification and reporting of commercial risks and opportunities.

Cost Control

• Forecast final account accuracy maintained within agreed tolerance.
• Timely implementation of corrective actions where projects fall below expected performance.

Governance and Compliance

Contract Administration

• Contractual notices, records and correspondence maintained accurately and on time.
• Compliance with NEC and other contract requirements.

Commercial Reporting

• Monthly reports submitted accurately and to required timescales.
• No significant audit findings relating to commercial management processes.

Professional Development

Training and Development

• Achievement of agreed annual CPD hours.
• Progress towards chartership (RICS or equivalent) where applicable.

Collaboration and Stakeholder Feedback

• Positive feedback from project managers, operational teams and senior management.
• Demonstrated contribution to continuous improvement initiatives across the business.

Suggested Annual Objectives for a Recently Qualified QS

1. Submit 100% of tenders before the deadline.
2. Complete all monthly CVRs by the agreed reporting date.
3. Maintain applications for payment with less than 2% value queried by clients.
4. Ensure 95% of variations are identified and submitted within contractual timescales.
5. Support delivery of project gross margins within 2% of budget.
6. Complete a minimum of 35 hours CPD per year.
7. Progress towards professional accreditation within 2-3 years.

These KPIs are realistic for an early-career Quantity Surveyor whilst still driving behaviors that improve profitability, cash flow, tender quality and commercial governance. They also align well with the multidisciplinary nature of the role across DYWIDAG's Repair & Strengthening, SHM and Geotechnical operations.
