Job Description

Alpiq’s Merchant Trading desk is looking for a motivated and analytically driven intern to support the development of systematic trading capabilities. You will work at the intersection of quantitative research, algorithmic execution, and energy trading, contributing directly to the design and implementation of data‑driven trading solutions. This internship offers a unique opportunity to collaborate closely with experienced traders and quantitative specialists, gaining hands‑on exposure to real‑world markets and advanced trading technology.

Your accountabilities

  • Develop and test automated execution algorithms in Python, contributing to the desk’s systematic trading infrastructure.
  • Conduct quantitative research to design and refine trading signals across various markets.
  • Perform backtesting and performance analysis, evaluating strategy robustness, risk characteristics, and market behaviour.
  • Work closely with traders to translate conceptual ideas into implementable, systematic models.
  • Support continuous improvement of the team’s research workflows, data pipelines, and modelling approaches.

Your profile

  • You thrive in a quantitative, research‑driven environment and enjoy solving complex problems with data, mathematics, and code. You are curious about markets—ideally energy markets—and motivated to see your work applied in a real trading context.
  • You are currently pursuing a Master’s degree (or already have achieved it) in a quantitative field such as Applied Mathematics, Physics, Engineering, Computer Science, Quantitative Finance, or Financial Engineering in general.
  • Experience with backtesting frameworks, time‑series modelling, or algorithmic trading concepts.
  • Strong proficiency in Python for numerical analysis and modelling.
  • Solid foundation in mathematics, statistics, or applied quantitative methods.
  • Ability to work independently on research tasks while collaborating effectively with traders and engineers.
  • Fluency in English
  • Swiss/EU passport or permit to work in Switzerland
