About Future Fund

At the Future Fund, we’re for future minds – like yours. The new investors and creators who thrive on different thinking and doing it together. Those who glimpse opportunity before it strikes and step up every day to grab it.

The Future Fund is Australia's Sovereign Wealth Fund, managing over $340 billion across seven public asset funds with the same purpose: growing Australia’s future. We are a global investor and work closely with world leading investment organisations to access the best investment ideas.

Where others see challenges, we see more interesting investment experiences. Every person, every skillset, every mindset is an asset. We’ve got every future generation to consider, yet our approach to investing is incredibly pure: we think about it deeply, and daily. Ours is a culture where great people grow the future together, with the rare ability to work collaboratively, think freely, and make a real difference.

Are you Futureminded? Let’s create what’s next.

The Opportunity

We are seeking a Quantitative Research Strategist to deliver rigorous, decision-relevant research that strengthens long-term portfolio construction and strategic investment decision-making.

Reporting to the Director, Investment Research, this role sits within a broader investment research context and combines quantitative modelling, portfolio diagnostics, and empirical scenario/regime analysis. You’ll translate structural themes into measurable indicators, testable hypotheses, and implementable portfolio levers — helping colleagues make clearer, more confident decisions.

This role suits someone who enjoys working at the intersection of research, investment judgement, and practical implementation — bringing technical depth, intellectual curiosity, and the ability to turn complex analysis into insight that can actually be used.

Key Responsibilities

In this role, you will:

  • Design, develop, validate and apply quantitative models and analytical frameworks to support investment research (including scenario analysis, regime analysis, and cross-asset interactions)

  • Conduct empirical analysis using large and complex datasets to investigate markets, asset classes and long-horizon investment themes, translating findings into portfolio diagnostics

  • Apply statistical, econometric and quantitative machine-learning methods (and AI-enabled techniques for unstructured data such as NLP), with a clear understanding of model limitations and robustness

  • Translate structural themes into quantifiable research questions, causal mechanisms and measurable signals (indicator frameworks, factor mappings, monitoring dashboards)

  • Build and maintain cross-asset diagnostics that link regimes and structural shifts to portfolio exposures, risk factors and implementation levers

  • Build and maintain scenario/regime toolkits (assumptions, stress tests, sensitivities) to support Portfolio Design and risk discussions

  • Partner with Portfolio Design, asset teams, Responsible Investments and Risk to quantify thematic narratives, test assumptions and improve decision-use clarity

  • Ensure all analysis is reproducible and auditable (code-based workflows, clear documentation, validation steps and limitations)

  • Translate quantitative research into clear implications for asset allocation, portfolio design and implementation considerations

  • Support internal investment forums and committees through high-quality materials and presentations, regularly sharing work-in-progress and iterating based on feedback

  • Contribute to the Investment Research agenda and engage with external research providers, managers and technical specialists to uplift internal capability

  • Strengthen modern research workflows (tooling, version control, documentation standards) and apply AI/ML techniques where they add insight and robustness

About You

You are a rigorous, outcomes-oriented researcher who combines strong technical capability with a practical investment application focus. You bring:

  • Ideally, a postgraduate qualification in a quantitative discipline (e.g., mathematics, statistics, quantitative finance, physics or engineering)

  • Experience in quantitative investment research, asset management, systematic research, or a closely related analytical role

  • Demonstrated experience building and applying quantitative models for financial markets and portfolio construction

  • Strong programming capability in Python, R, or similar, with experience working with large datasets

  • Solid understanding of financial markets, asset classes and portfolio construction concepts

  • Ability to synthesise complex analysis into clear, decision-relevant insights for a range of audiences (including senior stakeholders)

  • Experience applying AI / machine-learning techniques and working with modern analytical technologies in a research or investment context

  • Familiarity with robust research workflows: version control, reproducibility, documentation and validation standards

  • Intellectual curiosity, strong judgement, and the confidence to respectfully challenge ideas and assumptions

Please note that this opportunity is open to Australian citizens only.
