Salary Range: $21.00 - $24.00 Hourly
Job Shift: DayThe Quality Scientist performs microbiological and analytical testing on spices and seasonings, in-process materials, and finished products to ensure compliance with external standards and specifications. Microbiological methods include total plate count (TPC), yeast and mold and total coliforms. Analytical methods include wet chemistry techniques such as solvent extraction, the operation of laboratory instruments like HPLC, spectrophotometers, pH meters, and more. This role supports food safety and quality programs through production facility inspections, sampling, and documentation. The Quality Scientist maintains rigorous standards in line with GMPs, GLPs, and food safety protocols. All incumbents report to the QC Supervisor or, in their absence, the Head of Quality. This position plays a critical role in upholding product integrity across the production environment.
This position is regularly scheduled to be staffed Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. for first shift and 4:00 pm to 12:00 am for second shift, with occasional overtime as needed to support department and company business needs.
This posted position is heavily focused in microbiology testing with opportunity to cross train in other analytical methods.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Utilize aseptic technique to prepare microbiology testing materials, and media
- Perform microbiological testing of total plate count, yeast and mold and total coliforms including colony counting
- Perform analytical testing of ingredients, in-process materials, and finished goods
- Utilize wet chemistry techniques, including solvent extraction, and operate instruments such as HPLC, spectrophotometers, pH meters, moisture analyzers, water activity meters and more
- Collect, record, and provide basic interpretation of data using mathematical and scientific principles
- Maintain good working operation of all analytical instruments utilized, including cleaning, basic maintenance and calibration checks
- Ensure compliance with internal product specifications and quality standards
- Conduct inspections and sampling within the production facility to support food safety programs
- Document and report deviations and non-conformances to QC supervisors
- Maintain a sanitary and organized laboratory and work environment
- Adhere to GMPs, GLPs, and established food safety procedures
- Maintain cleanliness and sanitation of work environment
- Perform other duties as requested in support of the department and company business needs
QualificationsQUALIFICATIONS
- Highschool Diploma or GED required
- Associate Degree in a scientific discipline preferred
- Strong attention to detail
- Strong judgement and decision-making skills based on training and experience
- Self-motivated with a proactive approach to problem-solving and follow-through
- Previous experience in a laboratory or food manufacturing environment
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
