Responsibilities & Qualifications

The Novelis Uhrichsville team is seeking a Quality Engineer.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain site business management systems and ensure timely updates.
  • Calibrate equipment according to standards to meet customer requirements.
  • Order measuring equipment, oils, and chemicals for the finishing department.
  • Schedule preventive maintenance, calibrations, and cleaning of lab equipment.
  • Coordinate vendor activities and communications.
  • Ensure coolant systems are up to standard and make necessary adjustments.
  • Assist with decision-making within the QA department.
  • Support vendors with purchase orders and address order concerns.
  • Oversee regulatory requirements and standards certifications as required by the business unit, ISO 9001-2015, and customer-specific requirements.
  • Plan and lead the internal audit function, ensuring the organization’s readiness for annual registrar (SAI), corporate, and customer audits, surveys, and assessments.
  • Manage document control and serve as repository key user (ETQ).
  • Support the process team on management reviews, major quality initiatives, and process improvements.
  • Assess and resolve process deviations that impact quality, utilization, and efficiency.
  • Develop process control strategies to ensure long-term product and process capability.
  • Develop and implement projects ranging from immediate needs to long-term critical initiatives to optimize the business management system.
  • Participate in the development of new products, including process documentation and refinement for end-use efficiency, manufacturing cost control, and market development.
  • Identify and eliminate causes of quality defects, championing problem-solving methodologies.
  • Oversee metallurgist activities and perform microscopic metallography to support defect characterization and maintain the defect library.
  • Use world class manufacturing (WCM) methodologies to resolve customer complaints and solve internal quality concerns, often providing technical assistance and advice to the customer.
  • Adhere to and support company quality, environmental, health & safety, and certification standards, including ISO 9001:2015, ISO 14001:2015, ISO 45001:2018, IATF 16949:2016, and ASI Certifications, where applicable.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering required (Chemical, Mechanical, or Materials Engineering preferred).
  • Minimum of three years’ experience in relevant quality management system roles.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, with the ability to connect across all levels of the organization.
  • Strong human relations skills to motivate, train, and develop others to achieve objectives.
  • Initiative and desire to build proactive relationships with employees through follow-up, understanding their needs, and fostering collaboration.
  • Strong ability to coordinate and prioritize workload, managing multiple tasks without sacrificing attention to detail.
  • Flexibility to operate effectively in a fast-paced environment.
  • Proven computer skills with applicable software.
  • Demonstrate high analytical skills to compile and interpret lubricant performance data, viscosity, and additive balance for the cast-house water, hot and cold mill lubricant conditions
  • Multi-functional collaboration with process, operation, maintenance, and quality teams to align lubrication strategy with production goals.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, communication skills, and high level of personal initiative.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge of aluminum continuous casting (CC), and the fundamentals of both hot rolling (oil-in-water emulsions) and cold rolling processes (hydrocarbon-based oils).
  • Be familiar with aluminum cast house water treatment system, lubricant and coolant system in hot mills, and oil delivery in cold mills.
  • Strong knowledge of Lubricant chemistry, base oil types, additive functions (friction modifiers, antioxidants, anti-corrosion), and their effect on the strip surface quality.
  • Recognize Lubrication mechanism, the balance between under-lubrication (metal sticking, oxide pickup) and over-lubrication.

Location Profile

Opened in 1985 the Uhrichsville facility produces flat rolled aluminum coil. The Recycling mill prepares scrap aluminum that is used in the rolling mill to create rolled aluminum coils to a desired gauge. Anneals temper the aluminum then it is leveled and sized to customer specification. Employing more than 400 people the facility produces aluminum sheet for building and construction automotive distribution transportation and consumer durable applications.
