The Quality Control Supervisor is responsible for the supervision and execution of Quality Control (QC) activities, including internal and external inspections, quality audits, and the development, revision, implementation, and enforcement of Quality Management System (QMS) procedures and specifications.

This position supervises NDT Technicians across multiple shifts and works closely with production, engineering, site leadership, vendors, customers, third-party auditors, and other Valmont personnel to ensure products meet or exceed customer expectations and comply with applicable industry standards, regulatory requirements, and Valmont quality standards.

The Quality Control Supervisor also supports Site Leadership in identifying opportunities for improvement involving products, processes, suppliers, and customers. The position develops and supports corrective action and continuous improvement initiatives designed to reduce nonconformities, scrap, rework, and quality-related risks.

Essential Functions:

  • Hire, supervise, train, and professionally develop NDT Technicians within the Quality Control Department.
  • Provide day-to-day direction and oversight of Quality Control activities across applicable shifts.
  • Develop and maintain procedures and work instructions for the inspection of manufactured and purchased products in coordination with QC Technical Coordinators, Engineering, Drafting, customer requirements, and applicable codes and specifications.
  • Enforce established quality procedures, specifications, and work instructions.
  • Perform and oversee inspections to determine product conformance with customer, industry, and company requirements.
  • Observe manufacturing and operating activities throughout product areas to identify quality concerns and opportunities for improvement.
  • Develop corrective action plans and follow up with responsible parties to ensure actions are effectively implemented and sustained.
  • Conduct internal quality audits of departments and support annual AISC site audits.
  • Assist supervisors and leadership in evaluating field issues, customer concerns, and nonconformance data and developing corrective actions to prevent recurrence.
  • Analyze manufacturing processes to identify improvement opportunities and evaluate new processes for potential integration into existing quality systems.
  • Gather, analyze, maintain, and distribute quality-related data, metrics, and reports.
  • Support implementation and ongoing maintenance of the site and division Quality Management System.
  • Participate in task forces, committees, and continuous improvement initiatives as the Quality representative.
  • Work with suppliers, customers, customer representatives, and third-party auditors to address quality requirements and concerns.
  • Interpret applicable codes, standards, specifications, production drawings, and customer requirements.
  • Make product and process quality decisions, including identification and disposition of conforming and nonconforming conditions within assigned authority.
  • Support efforts to reduce internal scrap, rework, customer complaints, and the risk of shipment of nonconforming product.
  • Assist with job scheduling and work order processing from Engineering to Manufacturing as a backup, as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Site Manager, Regional Quality Manager, or Operations Manager.

Competencies:

  • Strong working knowledge of welding inspection, coating inspection, and non-destructive testing (NDT).
  • Thorough working knowledge of AISC Quality Management System requirements.
  • Ability to develop and interpret NDT procedures in accordance with applicable codes and specifications.
  • Knowledge of steel fabrication processes, including thermal cutting, forming, welding, painting, galvanizing, and non-destructive testing.
  • Ability to read and interpret production drawings, shop drawings, work orders, quality instructions, codes, standards, and specifications.
  • Knowledge of basic quality tools, including Pareto charts, fishbone diagrams, root cause analysis, and corrective action methodologies.
  • Strong leadership and employee development skills.
  • Strong problem-solving, planning, analytical, and decision-making skills.
  • Ability to make consistent and independent quality decisions based on applicable customer, industry, and company requirements.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with production employees, leadership, vendors, customers, auditors, and other internal and external stakeholders.
  • Ability to influence, persuade, and motivate others while maintaining appropriate quality standards.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, including Excel, Word, Outlook, and other applicable quality or data-tracking systems.
  • Ability to use precision measuring and inspection equipment, including micrometers, calipers, diameter tapes, plug gauges, snap gauges, inclinometers, mil thickness gauges, and NDT equipment.

Required Qualifications of Every Candidate (Education, Experience, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities)

*Work experience may be substituted for educational requirements as outlined below:

  • Bachelor’s degree with at least 1 year of quality control experience, OR
  • Associate’s degree with at least 2 years of quality control experience, OR
  • At least 4 years of quality control experience.
  • Current AWS Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) certification.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of welding inspection, coating inspection, and non-destructive testing.
  • Working knowledge of steel fabrication operations, including thermal cutting, forming, welding, painting, galvanizing, and NDT.
  • Experience interpreting applicable codes, standards, shop drawings, specifications, and quality requirements.
  • Knowledge of basic quality tools and corrective action methodologies, including root cause analysis.
  • Demonstrated leadership, problem-solving, planning, customer service, and written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to make informed, rational, and data-driven decisions.
  • Ability to effectively communicate quality requirements and influence others to achieve compliance.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office programs.

Highly Qualified Candidates Will Also Possess These Qualifications:

  • Previous Quality Control supervisory experience in an AISC-certified heavy fabrication environment.
  • SNT-TC-1A VT Level II certification.
  • SNT-TC-1A MT Level II certification.
  • SNT-TC-1A UT Level II certification.
  • NACE CIP Level I certification or equivalent coating inspection credential.
  • Certification as a Quality Manager, Quality Auditor, or Quality Engineer, such as ASQ CMQ/OE, CQA, or CQE.
  • Experience conducting or supporting AISC audits.
  • Basic understanding of statistical process control (SPC) and process capability.
  • Formal Lean Six Sigma training or experience leading Lean Six Sigma or other continuous improvement projects.
  • Previous experience supervising NDT Technicians or Inspectors across multiple shifts.
