Job Description

Job Purpose The Fleet & Heavy Equipment Mechanic is responsible for the inspection, preventive maintenance, diagnosis, and technical upkeep of the DSSU vehicle and heavy equipment fleet. DSSU operates a mixed fleet consisting of 8 Sinotruk trucks, 1 motor grader, 1 compactor, and 28 Light vehicles. The Mechanic will ensure that these vehicles and equipment remain safe, reliable, roadworthy, and operational, while minimizing breakdowns, downtime, and unnecessary repair costs. The position will provide practical mechanical support to drivers and operators and will ensure that maintenance issues are identified and addressed before they develop into major failures. Key Responsibilities Vehicle and Equipment Inspection Conduct regular mechanical inspections of all DSSU vehicles and heavy equipment. Carry out daily/pre-trip and periodic technical inspections as required. Identify mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and other faults. Assess the condition of vehicles and equipment and recommend necessary repairs. Inspect vehicles following breakdowns, accidents, or reports of abnormal performance. Identify safety-critical defects and immediately report vehicles/equipment that should not be operated. Preventive Maintenance Carry out scheduled preventive maintenance in accordance with manufacturer recommendations. Perform oil and filter changes, lubrication, fluid checks, brake inspections, battery checks, belt inspections, cooling-system checks, and other routine servicing. Monitor service intervals based on mileage and operating hours. Ensure vehicles receive servicing before their maintenance intervals are exceeded. Identify worn components and replace them before they cause major breakdowns. Heavy Equipment Maintenance Provide specialist hands-on maintenance and repair support for: Sinotruk heavy trucks, Motor grader and Compactor This includes inspection and maintenance of engines, transmissions, braking systems, hydraulic systems, electrical systems, cooling systems, tires, and other major components. The Mechanic should be able to identify when specialized repairs require an external workshop or authorized dealer and provide technical information to support such repairs. Electrical and Diagnostic Work Diagnose basic vehicle electrical faults. Inspect batteries, alternators, starters, lighting systems, wiring, fuses, and related components. Use appropriate diagnostic tools to identify vehicle faults where applicable. Interpret diagnostic results and determine appropriate corrective action. Keep up to date with modern vehicle electronic systems and diagnostic technology. Tires, Lubricants and Consumables Inspect tires for wear, damage, pressure, and safety. Monitor tire condition and recommend replacement when required. Check and maintain appropriate levels of engine oil, transmission fluid, coolant, brake fluid, hydraulic oil, and other lubricants. Advise on appropriate lubricants and spare parts for different vehicles and equipment. Report shortages of essential spare parts, tools, lubricants, and workshop consumables. Workshop and External Repair Coordination Maintain a clean, safe, and organized workshop environment. Use workshop tools and equipment correctly and safely. Keep records of repairs and parts used. Supervise or technically monitor repairs carried out by external garages where required. Inspect vehicles after external repairs before they return to operational service. Report poor-quality or incomplete repair work to the supervisor. Requirements Qualifications and Experience Minimum Qualification: Diploma or Advanced Certificate in Automotive Mechanics, Motor Vehicle Technology, Mechanical Engineering, Heavy Equipment Mechanics, or a related technical field. Experience: Minimum 3 years of practical experience as a motor vehicle/heavy equipment mechanic. Demonstrated experience servicing and repairing diesel trucks and heavy equipment. Experience with Sinotruk/Howo or similar heavy-duty trucks is highly desirable. Experience working on motor graders, compactors, or similar construction/road-maintenance equipment is an important advantage. Experience maintaining Toyota, Volkswagen, Corolla vehicles and pickup trucks. Experience with vehicle electrical systems and electronic diagnostics. Experience working in a fleet, workshop, construction, road maintenance, transport, or similar operational environment. These assets are essential to the delivery of DSSU operations. A dedicated Mechanic is required because the fleet includes different types of vehicles and specialized equipment that require regular technical inspection and maintenance. Relying solely on external garages or waiting for breakdowns creates risks of operational delays, higher repair costs, premature equipment deterioration, and safety concerns. The Mechanic will provide immediate technical support, preventive maintenance, early fault detection, and timely repairs, allowing DSSU to maximize the availability and useful life of its existing fleet.
