Job Description

Worker Sub-Type:

Regular

QNX enhances the human experience and amplifies technology-driven industries, providing a trusted foundation for software-defined businesses to thrive. The business leads the way in delivering safe and secure operating systems, hypervisors, middleware, solutions, and development tools, along with support and services delivered by trusted embedded software experts. With a focus on reducing hardware dependency and increasing efficiency, QNX empowers organizations to unlock new possibilities in areas like high-performance computing at the edge, standards-based virtualization technologies, and cloud enablement. QNX® technology has been deployed in the world’s most critical embedded systems, including more than 275 million vehicles on the road today. QNX® software is trusted across industries including automotive, medical devices, industrial controls, robotics, commercial vehicles, rail, and aerospace and defense.

Purpose of the Role: The "QNX Everywhere" Initiative

QNX is on a mission to compete directly with Linux as the premier, go-to operating system for embedded development worldwide. Through our QNX Everywhere initiative, we are building a rich, seamless open-source ecosystem that brings the vast array of open-source software currently enjoyed on Linux natively onto the QNX Real-Time Operating System (RTOS).

As an Open-Source Software Developer, you will play a pivotal role in this initiative. You will analyze, port, optimize, and upstream a wide range of open-source software — spanning core system utilities, networking middleware, IPC frameworks, middleware stacks, applications, AI frameworks, and bleeding-edge Physical AI & Robotics stacks. By bringing these technologies to QNX, you will enable developers globally to build safe, secure, and feature-rich embedded solutions without sacrificing the rich open-source ecosystem.

You will conduct:

  • Broad Open-Source Porting & Integration: Analyze, port, build, and optimize open-source software across C, C++, Python, and Rust for the QNX RTOS. Projects span a wide variety of domains, including:
    • System Runtimes: Node.js, GTK, SQLite, Boost.
    • Networking & Middleware: SOME/IP, MQTT, DDS, Zenoh.
    • Physical AI & Robotics: ROS2, OpenPI, Google MediaPipe, OpenCV, ONNX Runtime, PyTorch/ExecuTorch, TensorFlow.
  • Upstreaming & Community Leadership: Work directly with upstream open-source communities and maintainers to integrate QNX build targets, patches, and CI configurations into mainstream repositories.
  • Hardware & Accelerator Enablement: Work with silicon partners to enable open-source software on diverse embedded platforms, including GPU/NPU acceleration blocks ( NVIDIA IGX Thor, AMD ROCm, Qualcomm, NXP).
  • QNX Subsystem Integration: Integrate open-source projects with core QNX subsystems (graphics, networking, USB, audio, sensors, and multimedia).
  • Porting Layers & Toolchain Support: Develop OS-specific abstraction layers, shims, and porting libraries; adapt cross-compilation build systems (CMake, Meson, Bazel, Cargo, GN/Ninja) for QNX toolchains.
  • Performance Optimization: Perform low-level profiling, memory footprint reduction, latency tuning, and performance optimization on embedded target hardware.

You will have:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, or equivalent practical experience.
  • Strong software development skills in C and C++ (C++14/17/20) and Python.
  • Proven experience with Linux/Unix development environments and cross-compilation toolchains (CMake, Meson, Ninja, Make).
  • Solid understanding of operating system internals and POSIX APIs (pthreads, IPC, memory management, networking sockets).
  • Excellent communication skills with an interest in collaborating within open-source developer communities.
  • Self-motivated with a passion for building software ecosystems.

Any of the below are considered a bonus:

  • Experience porting, building, or maintaining large open-source projects or Linux distributions.
  • Experience or interest in Physical AI, Robotics, or Vision frameworks (e.g., ROS2, OpenPI, MediaPipe, ONNX Runtime, PyTorch/ExecuTorch, TensorFlow, OpenCV).
  • Experience with GPU / Heterogeneous Compute stacks (NVIDIA CUDA/TensorRT, AMD ROCm, Vulkan Compute, OpenCL) on platforms like NVIDIA Thor/IGX or AMD silicon.
  • Knowledge of embedded GUI engines (Qt, GTK), or automotive/industrial middleware (DDS, SOME/IP, MQTT).
  • Hands-on experience with RTOS environments (QNX, VxWorks, FreeRTOS, Zephyr) or Linux kernel/driver internals.
  • Familiarity with Rust and cargo build targets for embedded or systems programming.
  • Active open-source contributions (GitHub/GitLab profile, upstream PRs, or patch submissions).

If you are ready to use your expertise to drive real innovation, we would love to hear from you!
