Reporting to the Quality Control Team Leader – Microbiology, you will play a key role in ensuring the quality and safety of our microbiological media products through the testing and examination of bottled and plated media.

Our laboratory processes approximately 1,500 batches per month of plated agar and bottled media and operates to internationally recognised standards, including UKAS-accredited ISO 17025 testing procedures, alongside methodologies such as CEN, ISO 6222, EUCAST, and CLSI. This is an excellent opportunity to work within a highly regulated laboratory environment that supports quality, innovation, and continuous improvement.

About the Role

As a QC Scientist, you will be responsible for the sampling, testing, analysis, and reporting of quality control results for plated and bottled products. You will ensure testing is performed accurately, efficiently, and in compliance with regulatory and quality standards.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct microbiological (growth promotion, fertility testing, antibiotic sensitivity testing), contamination, membrane filtration and physical testing (including pH and appearance checks) of bottled and plated media products.
  • Perform laboratory activities in accordance with ISO 17025, ISO 13485, UKAS requirements, and internal quality procedures.
  • Ensure all testing is carried out safely and in compliance with company Health & Safety policies.
  • Accurately record and report test results using the SAP quality management system.
  • Identify and escalate non-conforming results to the QC Team Leader or Quality Manager.
  • Follow established laboratory procedures and regulatory requirements to maintain testing integrity and quality standards.
  • Authorise results and release approved batches following successful completion of training.
  • Contribute to performance and development objectives, including laboratory scorecard metrics.
  • Provide training and support to colleagues when authorised by the QC Team Leader or Quality Manager.

About You

To be successful in this role, you will ideally have:

  • A degree in Microbiology or a related scientific discipline.
  • A minimum of 2 years relevant laboratory experience.
  • Experience working within a microbiology, quality control, or laboratory environment.
  • An understanding of quality management systems and regulated laboratory practices.
  • Strong organisational and time management skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities effectively.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • A proactive and positive approach, with the ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Strong attention to detail and a commitment to delivering high-quality results.
  • The ability to use initiative and perform effectively in a fast-paced environment.

Thermo Fisher Scientific recently announced that it has entered into an agreement to sell its microbiology business to Astorg, a leading pan-European private equity firm with deep expertise in healthcare, focused on a select set of subsectors, including pharmaceutical services and technology, medtech and related services, life science tools and diagnostics.

This decision follows a thoughtful evaluation as part of Thermo Fisher’s ongoing business strategy to actively manage and strengthen our portfolio.

We expect the transaction will be completed in the second half of 2026, subject to customary closing conditions and applicable regulatory approvals. Until the transaction is complete, Thermo Fisher will continue to operate the business.

If you join the microbiology business prior to the close of the transaction, your employment is expected to transition to Astorg.
