Job Description

The QA/QC Substation Technician ensures the quality and compliance of substation construction, maintenance, and operations through inspection, testing, troubleshooting, and documentation. The technician supports safe, efficient, and uninterrupted electrical service delivery.

Essential Functions

Quality Assurance & Control

  • Conduct inspections and testing of substation equipment and installations to ensure compliance with engineering standards, safety codes, and project specifications.
  • Document and report non-conformances and assist in corrective action implementation.
  • Maintain accurate QA/QC records, including test results, inspection reports, and calibration logs.

Technical Functions/Duties:

  • Inspect, calibrate, and repair substation components including:
    • Transformers
    • Circuit breakers
    • Reclosers
    • Voltage regulators
    • Capacitors
    • Control wiring and protection relays
  • Perform oil sampling and analysis for equipment condition monitoring.
  • Inspect, verify and document material deliveries against Bill of Material, check for discrepancies and damage.
  • Read and interpret system maps, one-line diagrams, and schematics.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs.
  • Frequent bending, climbing, and manual dexterity required.

Maintenance & Operations:

  • Assist in setup and operation of mobile substations.
  • Perform preventive and corrective maintenance on substation equipment.
  • Support construction activities including concrete work, steel erection, and equipment installation.
  • Operate heavy machinery such as forklifts, cranes, and trenchers.

Safety & Compliance:

  • Follow lockout/tagout procedures and other safety protocols.
  • Use appropriate PPE and ensure safety of self and others around high-voltage equipment.
  • Stay updated on local, state, and national electrical codes and standards.

Minimum Qualifications

Education & Experience:

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Minimum 2 years of experience in electrical utility or substation work.
  • Completion of a technical training program or apprenticeship preferred.

Licenses & Certifications:

  • Valid Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) preferred.
  • Certifications in QA/QC practices or NETA testing preferred.

Skills & Abilities:

  • Proficiency in using test instruments and diagnostic tools.
  • Strong understanding of A/C and D/C electrical systems.
  • Competence in computer applications (Excel, Word, SCADA software).
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple tasks under pressure.
  • Able to lift and carry up to 50 lbs.
  • Able to work in various weather conditions and elevated surfaces.
