Job Description

The QA/C Technician – Welding & Fabrication supports quality assurance activities within the pipe spool fabrication and welding shop. This role focuses on monitoring the full welding and fabrication process—from material verification and fit-up through welding, testing, and final inspection—to ensure compliance with applicable codes, project specifications, and internal quality procedures. Success in this role requires strong technical knowledge of welding processes, metallurgy, and fabrication practices, along with the ability to proactively prevent defects and support consistent production quality.

Why This Role Matters to Modern Niagara
Quality in fabrication directly impacts safety, reliability, and project delivery. This role plays a critical part in ensuring fabricated piping systems meet regulatory, code, and client requirements before leaving the shop. By identifying issues early and supporting continuous improvement, the QA/QC Technician helps reduce rework, protect schedules, and uphold Modern Niagara’s reputation for high-quality industrial and mechanical solutions.

Key Impact / Purpose

  • Ensure welding and fabrication activities comply with ASME, CSA, TSSA, project specifications, and internal quality standards.
  • Prevent defects by monitoring welding processes and fabrication practices throughout production.
  • Support safe, reliable, and traceable delivery of fabricated piping and assemblies.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement through defect tracking, root cause analysis, and corrective actions.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Welding Process Monitoring:

  • Monitor fit-up, joint preparation, alignment, root gap, bevel angles, and dimensional tolerances prior to welding.
  • Verify compliance with approved Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS), Procedure Qualification Records (PQR), and welder qualifications.
  • Observe welding techniques and parameters to ensure adherence to procedures and prevent defects.

Material and Traceability Control:

  • Verify material traceability, including heat numbers, markings, and Mill Test Reports (MTRs), prior to fabrication.
  • Confirm correct materials are issued to the shop and remain properly identified throughout fabrication.
  • Inspect incoming piping materials, fittings, flanges, and components against project specifications.

In-Process and Final Inspection:

  • Perform visual and dimensional inspections of pipe spools, plumbing assemblies, sleeves, and skids.
  • Confirm orientation, flange alignment, and dimensional accuracy against isometric and fabrication drawings.
  • Inspect welds and fabrication details prior to release for NDT or hydrotesting.

NDT and Testing Coordination:

  • Coordinate visual and non-destructive testing (RT, UT, MT, PT) in accordance with Inspection Test Plans (ITPs).
  • Track acceptance rates and weld repair percentages.
  • Review NDT reports and verify compliance with applicable acceptance criteria.

Hydrotesting and Mechanical Completion:

  • Witness and document hydrostatic and pressure testing activities.
  • Verify test setups, pressures, and documentation prior to release for shipment.

Quality Documentation:

  • Maintain inspection records, weld logs, NDT reports, material traceability records, and turnover packages.
  • Record Non-Conformance Reports (NCRs) and maintain defect logs for trend analysis and KPI reporting.
  • Support compilation of final quality dossiers and project documentation.

Continuous Improvement:

  • Participate in root cause analysis of recurring weld and fabrication issues.
  • Recommend corrective actions to improve weld quality, fit-up procedures, and shop practices.
  • Promote quality awareness and adherence to procedures across the shop floor.

Must Haves:

  • Diploma or degree in Welding Engineering Technology, Metallurgy, Mechanical Engineering Technology, Welding Inspection, or Quality Control.
  • 3–5 years of experience in welding inspection or quality control within a pipe fabrication, pressure piping, or industrial manufacturing environment.
  • Experience inspecting carbon steel and stainless steel fabrication.
  • Strong understanding of welding processes (GMAW, GTAW, FCAW, SMAW), welding metallurgy, and heat effects.
  • Ability to read and interpret piping isometrics, P&IDs, weld maps, and fabrication drawings.
  • Knowledge of applicable codes and standards, including ASME B31.3, CSA, TSSA, pressure piping requirements, and Inspection Test Plans (ITPs).
  • High attention to detail with strong documentation and reporting skills.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with welders, fitters, supervisors, and project teams.
  • CWB Level 2 Welding Inspector certification.

Nice to Haves:

  • NDT certification or hands-on familiarity with MT, PT, and UT.
  • Experience in pressure piping or industrial process piping fabrication environments.

About Modern Niagara

We build for life.

We build for the life that happens indoors. We know that Canadians spend the vast majority of their time inside buildings. From receiving healthcare to legislating and representing citizens to participating in sports and other activities, we make any space comfortable and healthy for those who use it. We are committed to providing exceptional occupant experiences.

We build for the life of the building. Buildings can best reach the objectives they were set out to achieve when we look at them over the course of their entire life, including design, construction, operation, maintenance, and improvement. For us, using data and evidence to inform decisions provides us and our partners with an effective path towards high-performing, sustainable facilities.

We build for the life of our communities. We know that buildings do not exist in a vacuum. Buildings, streets, and the people that occupy and use them are but a few of the ingredients that make up our cities and communities. We believe that nurturing social equity, enabling economic activity, and reducing our impact on the environment in all that we do – including how we build and maintain our buildings – is integral to playing a positive role in sustaining our communities for us and for future generations.

Modern Niagara helps building owners, managers, and general contractors achieve their objectives by meeting the mechanical, electrical, integrated building technology, and building services needs of their buildings across Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton, Toronto, Southwestern Ontario, and Ottawa. We also develop custom, turnkey solutions to help reach the desired outcomes.
