Shop Mechanic
F. J. Nugent is seeking an experienced Shop Mechanic for our office located in Longwood, Florida.
We are a distributor and manufacturer’s representative of pumps, electrical controls, odor control equipment as well as water and wastewater treatment equipment. The company was established in 1996.
In addition to the sales of new equipment, we also service and repair the products that we sell. We have several offices located throughout Florida.

The Shop Mechanic will focus on the inspection, repair, and testing of pumps and related equipment within the shop environment. This position is responsible for diagnosing mechanical and electrical issues, performing repairs, and ensuring equipment is restored to proper working condition. This is a hands-on role requiring strong troubleshooting skills and experience working with centrifugal pumps, motors, and wastewater equipment. The Shop Mechanic will work closely with the service team to support field operations, maintain quality standards, and ensure timely turnaround of repairs.
Responsibilities:
• Diagnose, disassemble, repair, and reassemble centrifugal pumps, submersible pumps, and related wastewater equipment.
• Inspect incoming equipment and determine repair scope, parts requirements, and labor needs.
• Perform mechanical repairs including bearings, seals, impellers, shafts, and housings.
• Troubleshoot and test electric motors (240V / 480V) and assist with basic electrical diagnostics.
• Conduct performance testing of pumps after repair to ensure proper operation.
• Read and interpret pump curves, O&M manuals, and technical drawings.
• Maintain accurate documentation of repairs, parts used, and findings.
• Coordinate with service team on parts ordering and repair timelines.
• Maintain a clean, organized, and safe shop environment.
• Follow company safety procedures including proper lifting, rigging, and PPE usage.
• Assist with occasional field service work or emergency support if needed.
• Support continuous improvement of shop processes, efficiency, and quality standards.
Experience and Requirements:
• Minimum 2+ years of mechanical repair experience required.
• Wastewater and/or pump industry experience strongly preferred.
• Experience working on pumps required.
• Strong mechanical troubleshooting skills required.
• Basic electrical knowledge required, including: 1-phase 120/240v, 3-phase 240/480v
• Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics preferred.
• Ability to read pump curves, technical documents, and O&M manuals required.
• Experience with seals, bearings, and rotating equipment required.
• Strong attention to detail and workmanship quality.
• Self-starter with ability to work independently and as part of a team.
• Good communication skills.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Outlook, Excel, and Word.
• Ability to complete computer-based reporting and documentation accurately and on time.
• High school diploma required.
• Associate degree and / or technical school preferred.
• Valid driver’s license required.
• Clean driving record required.
• Drug Test and Background Checks are required

Work Environment & Physical Requirements
• Primarily shop-based with occasional field support.
• Work involves industrial equipment in an active shop environment where noise levels may be higher at times.
• Equipment serviced can be large and requires proper handling; all work is performed following established safety procedures and standards.
• Company provides appropriate training, tools, and safety equipment to ensure a safe working environment.
• Work involves wastewater equipment.
• Ability to lift up to 50 lbs required.
• Must be able to stand, bend, and work with tools for extended periods.
Supervisory Responsibility
This position does not have direct reports.
Travel
This role is primarily shop-based with occasional field support.
