Salary

(A-E Steps)

Public Works Maintenance Worker II:

$22.63 - $27.50 Hourly/$1,810.40 - $2,200.00 Biweekly

Public Works Maintenance Worker III:

$24.98 - $30.36 Hourly/$1,998.40 - $2,428.80 Biweekly

DOT Incentive!

Additional $1/hour on top of Public Works Maintenance Worker hourly rate for obtaining/possessing a valid Class A license.

About the Position: Under varying levels of supervision, performs a variety of work in the construction, modification, maintenance, repair, and operation of County infrastructure, including roads, bridges, culverts, signs, traffic safety and control devices, and other structures; operates light and heavy construction equipment; inspects facilities and makes recommendations regarding improvements.

Examples of duties

  • Performs construction, installation, maintenance, and repair work on County roads, bridges, culverts, signs, pavement markings, traffic safety and control devices, and other related public works duties.
  • Operates specialized vehicles and a variety of light, medium, and heavy equipment related to the construction, maintenance, and repair of County infrastructure; ensures security of the vehicles.
  • Performs various special construction, maintenance, and repair activities, including erecting, cleaning, painting, and repairing guard rails, girders, stringers, and other road structures, building fencing, cleaning and repairing ditches and levees, erecting storage sheds, utility buildings, work shops, and other structures, removing trees, snow and ice, and other debris, and cleaning up vandalism.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

Public Works Maintenance Worker II: One (1) year of experience as a Public Works Maintenance Worker I with Tehama County or a minimum of two (2) years of experience in general construction and/or maintenance, bridge construction, maintenance and repair, traffic control and/or road maintenance and repair, including but not limited to; road construction, pavement resurfacing, installation of guardrails, curbs, gutters, sidewalks, storm drain system, snow removal, and tree removal

Public Works Maintenance Worker III: Two (2) years of experience as a Public Works Maintenance Worker II or a minimum of four (4) years of experience performing complex duties in general construction and/or maintenance, bridge construction, maintenance and repair, traffic control and/or road maintenance and repair, including but not limited to; road construction, pavement resurfacing, installation of guardrails, curbs, gutters, sidewalks, storm drain system, snow removal, and tree removal

Other combinations of education and experience may be considered.

License & Special Requirements:

Public Works Maintenance Worker II:

  • Requires a valid California Class A driver’s license with Air brake, Tanker and Double/Triple Endorsements and a current Department of Transportation (DOT) Medical Certificate, or a valid California Class C driver’s license and ability to obtain a valid California Class A driver’s license with Air Brake, Tanker and Double/Triple Endorsements within six (6) months of hire.
  • Requires a current (within thirty days) DMV Driving Record Report.
  • May be required to obtain a Hazmat endorsement
  • Applicants who are the successful candidate and do not possess a Class A Driver’s License will be required, per the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, to show completion of attendance from a certified truck driving school at the sole cost of the candidate. The Department’s requirement is for new hire maintenance workers to obtain a Class A license within 6 months of hire. Applicants may contact the Department for more information.

Public Works Maintenance Worker III:

  • Requires a valid California Class A driver’s license with Air Brake, Tanker and Double/Triple Endorsements and a current DOT Medical Certificate.
  • Requires a current (within thirty days) DMV Driving Record report.
  • May be required to obtain a Hazmat endorsement.
  • May be required to obtain a welding certification.

Public Works Maintenance Worker II/III: Must comply with U.S. Department of Transportation regulations as a “Safety Sensitive” classification, including pre-employment, random, reasonable suspicion and post-accident drug and alcohol testing as a condition of employment.

The department is currently recruiting for one (1) vacancy.

In addition, Tehama County is establishing an eligibility list to fill future vacancies for a Public Works Maintenance Worker II/III, as well as subsequent vacancies which occur during the life of the eligibility list.
