POSITION: Public Safety Officer

LOCATION: Radium Springs Middle Magnet School of the Arts

The Public Safety Teacher is responsible for providing engaging, standards-aligned instruction to middle school students in the areas of public safety, emergency preparedness, personal safety, civic responsibility, and related career pathways. The teacher will create a safe, structured, and inclusive learning environment while helping students develop the knowledge, skills, and understanding necessary to explore careers in public safety and community service. The ideal candidate will bring practical knowledge of public safety, strong classroom management skills, and the ability to connect real-world experiences to age-appropriate instruction.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

1. Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in education, public safety, criminal justice, emergency management, fire science, law enforcement, or a related field;
2. Valid Georgia Teacher certification or Charter Waiver eligible;
3. Knowledge of public safety principles, procedures, and practices;
4. Ability to effectively communicate with middle school students and establish positive relationships;
5. Strong classroom management, organizational, and interpersonal skills;
6. Ability to develop and deliver engaging, age-appropriate instruction;
7. Demonstrated commitment to student safety, academic achievement, and personal development.

SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

1. Knowledge of middle school instructional practices and adolescent development;
2. Knowledge of public safety concepts and career pathways;
3. Ability to communicate complex concepts in an age-appropriate and engaging manner;
4. Strong verbal and written communication skills;
5. Effective classroom management and conflict-resolution skills;
6. Ability to work collaboratively with students, families, colleagues, administrators, and community partners;
7. Ability to use instructional technology and digital resources effectively;
8. Ability to exercise sound judgment and maintain confidentiality;
9. Commitment to creating a safe, supportive, and inclusive learning environment.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Teach and reinforce appropriate safety procedures, decision-making skills, teamwork, leadership, communication, and problem-solving;
2. Differentiate instruction to meet the academic, developmental, and learning needs of diverse middle school students;
3. Assess student learning through assignments, projects, activities, examinations, and other appropriate measures;
4. Maintain accurate records of student attendance, grades, progress, and other required documentation;
5. Collaborate with school administrators, teachers, counselors, families, and community partners to support student success;
6. Incorporate current public safety practices, technology, and real-world examples into instruction when appropriate;
7. Support school-wide safety initiatives and emergency preparedness activities as assigned;
8. Maintain classroom equipment, instructional materials, and supplies in accordance with established safety procedures;
9. Participate in professional development, faculty meetings, parent conferences, school activities, and other assigned responsibilities;
10. Maintain professional knowledge of relevant educational practices, public safety standards, and applicable policies and regulations;
11. Perform other duties as assigned by the school administration.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENT:

1. Ability to stand, walk, and move throughout the classroom for extended periods of time;
2. Ability to occasionally lift or move instructional materials and classroom supplies (up to approximately 25 pounds);
3. Ability to bend, stoop, kneel, and assist young students as needed;
4. Work is performed primarily in a classroom environment with moderate noise levels typical of a school setting;
5. Requires frequent interaction with students, staff, and families throughout the school day.

SALARY RANGE: Competitive salary and excellent benefits package, in accordance with the DCSS Compensation Guide
