The Public Safety Support staff member is a non-sworn position responsible for enforcing university parking rules and regulations, maintaining public safety equipment operated by the Department of Public Safety, and providing additional logistical, safety and security responsibilities as called upon. Work includes the protection of life and property through the enforcing of university regulations and all aspects of the parking system. Support includes manual and clerical tasks to assist the unit supervisor, coordination and mentor part-time student officers, traffic direction and control, as well as logistical operations to support the University's Division of Health and Public Safety. Limited protective work in the guarding and securing of buildings, grounds, and facilities against loss or damage; monitoring and inspecting buildings and grounds for safety and security procedure, regulations, and enforcement will be required. This position will assist other university police and public safety officers upon request. Work will involve the use of independent judgement in responding to emergencies, transporting and using support equipment, as well as working in storm shelters during weather emergencies. Work is frequently performed outdoors in all weather conditions. Employee will generally work day shifts, but may be assigned an evening shift during special events and special sporting events, or may be called to work odd hours for special events or activities on campus. Work is performed under general supervision of the Public Safety Services Supervisor and in accordance with established routine and guidelines checked by personal inspections, review of reports, and discussions with the unit supervisor.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Oversees the delivery/pickup critical public safety / traffic control equipment or time sensitive information to support public safety across campus.
- Coordinates appropriate personnel and equipment as it relates to public safety orders, emergency breakdowns, etc. under the supervision of the Public Safety Services Supervisor.
- Responds to telephone calls, dispatch calls, and addresses public safety needs camps-wide as directed.
- Keeps records of maintenance performed on assigned Department of Public Safety vehicles and utility equipment.
- Enforces the parking rules and regulations of the university daily, as well as, educating persons on established university policies. Patrols the campus parking areas and roadways in university public safety vehicles, on foot, bicycle or scooter, in order to enforce parking regulations and provide service or assistance to the Campus Community.
- Provides coordination and assistance with maintaining all of the Department’s logistical equipment and supplies.
- Coordinates with vendors and visitors on parking issues / requests on university property to resolve parking challenges present, past, and future as they relate to parking events.
- Coordinates and forms daily parking enforcement plans to accomplish parking enforcement goals communicated by the Public Safety Services Supervisor in support of the needs of the University.
- Manages the Parking Services Office and daily parking operations in the absence of the unit supervisor.
- Maintain, install and remove boots/vehicle restraints when needed in order to identify repeat violators. Keeping accurate records on equipment location.
- Trains new student / employee parking assistants with established training manuals and checklists. Completes other training as delegated by the Public Safety Services Supervisor.
- Assists university and area law enforcement and public safety personnel upon request.
- Operates a two-way radio, answers telephones, and performs other dispatch tasks when needed.
- Unlocks car doors, conducts battery jumps and assists motorists upon request.
- Performs escorts on campus upon request.
- Participates in training activities including classroom, seminar, or field training.
- Listens to employees, students, coworkers, visitors and speaks with them in all aspects of their situation to best handle their matter in the most logical and precise way.
- Completes delegated special projects in a timely manner.
- Works all special events including, but not limited to: athletic events, commencement ceremonies, concerts, emergency responses, and any other special event as directed.
- Loads, moves, sets-up, breaks-down, orderly stores away all traffic control cones, sticks, barricades, stanchions, signs, etc. Maintains public safety trailers including organizing, maintaining daily order and cleanliness.
- Balances delegation and duty with workload effectively. Delegates enforcement / equipment logistics as necessary to assistants. Balances field and office work appropriately.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Required Minimum Qualifications:
- Relevant work experience in a similar field.
- Any combination of training and experience equivalent to a High School Diploma.
- Valid Alabama driver’s license.
- No felony convictions or convictions for crimes of moral turpitude.
