Job Description

The City of Topeka’s Police Department is seeking a dedicated individual to join its team as its Public Safety Education Instructor. As a civilian member of the Police Department, this position serves as the

City’s primary representative within the Topeka Center for Advanced Learning and Careers (TCALC) Public Safety pathway program and plays a key role in supporting the City’s commitment to community engagement, youth development, and the cultivation of future public safety professionals.

This position will work directly with students, parents, school staff, community partners and public safety professionals to develop, coordinate and deliver career-focused instruction that introduces students to law enforcement, public safety, criminal justice, and related career fields. This is a full-time position that will work year-round.

What you'll do:

  • Develop, implement and maintain curriculum, instructional materials and educational programming.
  • Deliver classroom instruction, hands-on learning experiences, and career-focused training.
  • Evaluate student performance, maintain required educational records, and provide timely feedback, mentorship and academic guidance.
  • Manage program documentation, reports, certifications, inventories, budgets and other administrative requirements necessary to support program operations.
  • Represent the City of Topeka and the Public Safety Career Pathway program at events to promote student engagement and program visibility.

  • Knowledge of the principles, practices, and techniques of classroom instruction, curriculum development, and student engagement.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills.
  • Strong organizational skills and a high level of attention to detail.
  • The ability to establish and maintain a positive, inclusive and productive learning environment.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in Criminal Justice, Education, Public Administration, Public Safety, Human Services, Communications, or a related field and a minimum of three (3) years of experience in education, law enforcement, public safety, workforce development, youth development, or a related field; OR
    • Associate’s degree from an accredited college or university in Criminal Justice, Education, Public Administration, Public Safety, Human Services, Communications, or a related field and a minimum of five (5) years of experience in education, law enforcement, public safety, workforce development, youth development, or a related field; OR
    • High school diploma or its equivalent and a minimum of seven (7) years of experience in law enforcement, public safety, education, workforce development, youth development, or a related field.
  • Must obtain and maintain all Kansas State Department of Education (KSDE) and/or Career and Technical Education (CTE) certifications required to instruct within the assigned TCALC Public Safety Career Pathway within one (1) year of hire date.
  • Experience developing curriculum, delivering classroom instruction, mentoring youth, or coordinating educational or workforce development programs is highly preferred.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Kansas driver’s license and city-insurable driving record.
  • Must pass an extensive background check, including a Criminal Justice Information System (CJIS) background check, KBI fingerprinting and polygraph.

Entry rate of pay: $23.76 - $27.68 per hour, depending on qualifications
