If you’re a professional communicator who loves the outdoors and wildlife, this might be your dream job! We’re looking for a talented, detail-oriented leader — someone with expert verbal and written communication skills — to fill the role of public information manager in the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources’ Salt Lake office.
You would work closely with division employees, partners and the news media on a wide variety of outreach and communications efforts focused on wildlife (management, safety, viewing, conflicts, etc.) and wildlife-related events and activities (hunting, fishing, viewing, etc.). You would research, write and distribute information, working with established and emerging media outlets on local and statewide topics. You would be expected to expertly represent the division as the lead spokesperson. This unique position also involves opportunities for hands-on fieldwork with fish and wildlife.
Be actively involved in and informed about projects and efforts, and then use that knowledge to create and share stories that will engage the public and increase their support for wildlife management and conservation. Help provide strategic oversight for the division’s communications efforts, including directly supervising two videographers on the communications team and helping set project priorities for division video and A/V efforts. Serve as the division's lead spokesperson and work with the media on statewide wildlife issues and hot topics. Take complex issues and distill them into easy-to-understand concepts.Cultivate relationships and communicate regularly with reporters at established and emerging media outlets.Use your expert writing skills to craft accurate news releases and media invites on topics of statewide and regional interest.Use your expert communication skills to develop compelling content for distribution on the Division’s website, blog and social media channels. Coordinate with communication team members across the state to understand and promote story ideas, events, upcoming management projects and efforts, etc.
Minimum or "day-one" qualifications:Superior verbal communication skills — you must be articulate, engaging, concise and comfortable in speaking with the media in person, over the phone and on camera. The ability to communicate information and ideas clearly and concisely in writing. A talent for taking, or choosing, compelling photos and video footage that complement written work.Experience in using and monitoring multiple social media channels in a professional setting. The ability to upload information into a website content-management system. Strong interpersonal communication abilities that help build trust and positive relationships.Creative, pragmatic ways to solve problems and improve processes. An understanding of the history and traditions associated with hunting, fishing and shooting sports, and recognition of how those activities support wildlife conservation.Experience using the Associated Press Stylebook in a professional communication capacity.Preferred or trainable/on-the-job qualifications: Bachelor's degree in journalism, communications, media or a related degree is preferred. Additional consideration may be given to candidates who have professional communications or journalism experience.Experience taking professional-quality photos and video footage in the outdoors.Experience in using social media channels in a professional setting.Experience using photo- and video-editing software in a professional setting.
