The Department of Human Services (DHS) is seeking a Public Health Nurse to join our team. This Nurse will provide health services while traveling within Arlington to schools, public health clinics, other Department of Human Services Units, and to community buildings to facilitate services or to participate in meetings or task forces. The population served is culturally diverse.

Major Job Duties:

  • Providing public health nursing services to school-age students, including assessing health needs, identifying medically at-risk students, developing care plans, and referring students to appropriate health resources;
  • Providing health education to students, parents, and school staff on topics including Family Life Education and other health-related issues;
  • Reviewing student health documentation to ensure compliance with school entry requirements;
  • Administering state mandated school vaccines in school clinics and health fairs;
  • Implementing public health priorities by attending occasional evening clinics, events, and trainings and participating in community health promotion activities;
  • Collaborating with the Community Health Protection Bureau on case finding and investigations and supporting community health initiatives;
  • Participating in Public Health Division emergency preparedness and response activities;
  • Managing school clinic operations by coordinating with the School Health Aide to provide effective student services;
  • Providing routine first aid and emergency care, providing clinical guidance to the School Health Aide, and overseeing student care;
  • Establishing effective communication with parents, school staff, and DHS staff regarding student health needs and services; and
  • Performing other job-related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing; and
  • Some experience as a Registered Nurse (RN).

Substitution(s): Education may be substituted by additional directly related experience on a year for year basis.

Licenses/Certifications:

  • Must be licensed or eligible for license by endorsement to practice professional nursing as a Registered Nurse in Virginia within 60 days of hire; and
  • Current CPR/BLS for Healthcare Providers certification or ability to obtain within 30 days of hire.

Desirable Qualifications: Preference may be given to applicants with a Master’s Degree in Nursing, Public Health, or a related field and/or one or more of the following:

  • Public health work experience in a school setting;
  • Pediatric nursing experience; and/or
  • Bilingual ability in English/Spanish.

Special Requirements

Background Check: A pre-employment criminal records check will be conducted. It will include checks of the following: criminal record, driving record, education, professional licensure, and credit history. You will be required to sign a release authorizing the County to obtain your background information.

Driver's License: Applicant must possess, or obtain by time of appointment, a valid driver’s license, and must provide or authorize Arlington County to obtain a copy of official driving record. Any offer of employment may be contingent upon favorable review of the applicant’s driving record.

Physical Requirements:

  • Light Work: Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally and/or negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. Regular and consistent movement is required of this position.

Additional Information

Work Hours: Full-time, Monday - Friday, 8:00am - 4:30pm with occasional evening hours for other clinics, events, and meetings (locations may be throughout Arlington County).

Locations:

  • Primary work location will be at one or more Arlington Public School clinics.
  • Meetings and training will be held at the School Health Bureau’s main office (2110 Washington Blvd.) or at other locations throughout Arlington County.
