The Public Health Department promotes the health of the entire community through varied programs ranging from reproductive health care and coordination of the response to health emergencies to individual case management to primary prevention of disease and wellness promotion. We are currently seeking one Public Health Nurse to be an integral part of our Communicable Disease Control Team.

Examples of duties

  • Investigates and documents communicable disease cases and outbreaks per Title 17, California Code of Regulations §2500 reporting requirements. This includes phone interviews, reviewing medical records, working with community providers, and conducting field visits. Tasks can involve confirming diagnoses, identifying exposed contacts, assessing risks, ensuring treatment, collecting specimens, enforcing infection control, offering education, completing reports, and reporting to regulatory agencies.
  • Screens Confidential Morbidity Reports, lab reports and other information regarding communicable diseases received via fax, phone, or electronically though the State of California CalREDIE system.
  • Maintains close collaboration with other jurisdictions, agencies, and healthcare facilities. Answers questions, provides technical support and training, and collaborate on complex health issues.
  • Works with the Nevada County Mobile Services Outreach Team, including providing HIV and Hepatitis C testing and counseling for community members.
  • Provides lead direction to other nurses and department staff during disease case and outbreak investigation, along with the implementation of disease control and prevention measures.
  • Assist with orientation of new staff, students, and interns to communicable disease control program and activities.
  • Develops and updates program related protocols, policies, and procedures.
  • Senior level position includes staff supervision duties.
  • Senior level position provides program related grant and contract management.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.

Supplemental information

Level I:
Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Nursing from an accredited college or university

Level II (in addition to the above):
Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Nursing from an accredited college or university.
Two years of nursing experience comparable to a Public Health Nurse I

Senior (in addition to the above):
Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Nursing from an accredited college or university.
Three years of nursing experience comparable to Nevada County’s Public Health Nurse II

Licenses and Certificates

Possession of a valid driver's license within 30 days of hire. A valid Class C driver's license must be maintained throughout employment in this class to perform the essential functions of the position.

Possession of a valid license as a Registered Nurse issued by the California Board of Registered Nursing

Possession of a valid Public Health Nurse certificate issued by the California Board of Registered Nursing or documentation of a submitted and pending application for the PHN certificate, which must be obtained within 1 year of hire as a Public Health Nurse I.
