Job Description

Position: Public Area / Lobby Attendant

Department: Housekeeping

Location: Chicago, IL

Employment Type: Full-Time / Part-Time

Compensation: $25.10 per Hour

The Study at University of Chicago is seeking a dependable and service-oriented Public Area / Lobby Attendant to help maintain a clean, welcoming, and thoughtfully presented environment throughout the hotel. This role is primarily responsible for the cleanliness and appearance of the hotel's lobby, Living Room, public restrooms, corridors, elevators, and other guest-facing common areas.

Because this position works throughout highly visible areas of the hotel, the Public Area / Lobby Attendant is an important part of the guest experience. The ideal candidate takes pride in noticing the details, responds quickly when an area needs attention, and is comfortable interacting with guests while maintaining a polished hotel environment.

Our caring and attentive team members reinforce our belief that guest service is our highest priority. We seek energetic, dependable individuals who take ownership of their surroundings and understand that a clean, well-maintained hotel is essential to genuine hospitality.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain the cleanliness, appearance, and organization of the hotel lobby, Living Room, entrances, public restrooms, elevators, corridors, stairwells, and other assigned public areas.
  • Continuously monitor high-traffic guest areas throughout the shift and promptly address cleaning or presentation needs.
  • Vacuum carpets and rugs and sweep, mop, and clean hard-surface flooring as needed.
  • Clean and sanitize public restrooms, including toilets, sinks, mirrors, counters, fixtures, floors, and other surfaces, and replenish supplies throughout the day.
  • Dust, wipe, and polish furniture, tables, fixtures, doors, windows, glass, decorative elements, and other surfaces throughout public areas.
  • Clean elevators, including doors, walls, control panels, tracks, and flooring.
  • Empty waste and recycling containers and maintain clean, orderly disposal areas.
  • Maintain hotel entrances and other arrival areas so they remain clean, orderly, and welcoming for guests.
  • Respond promptly to spills, debris, and other conditions requiring immediate attention, particularly in high-traffic guest areas.
  • Maintain the appearance and placement of lobby and public-area furniture, reporting damaged or worn items when identified.
  • Respond courteously to guest questions and requests and assist guests directly or connect them with the appropriate hotel team member.
  • Identify and promptly report maintenance concerns, damaged furnishings, lighting issues, or unsafe conditions to Engineering or Housekeeping leadership.
  • Assist with deep-cleaning projects and detailed cleaning of public spaces as assigned.
  • Maintain cleaning equipment, carts, supplies, storage areas, and assigned workspaces in a clean, organized, and safe condition.
  • Coordinate with Housekeeping, Guest Services, Engineering, Food & Beverage, and other departments to maintain hotel presentation and respond to operational needs.
  • Assist the broader Housekeeping team with additional cleaning or operational needs when required.
  • Follow all company safety, security, sanitation, and lost-and-found procedures.

Fundamentals

  • Previous hotel housekeeping, public-area, custodial, or professional cleaning experience preferred.
  • A genuine commitment to hospitality, cleanliness, and maintaining a welcoming environment for guests.
  • Strong attention to detail with the ability to recognize and address cleaning and presentation needs without constant direction.
  • Comfort working in highly visible guest areas while maintaining a professional and hospitable presence.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and courteously with guests and team members.
  • Ability to work independently while contributing positively to a team-oriented hotel environment.
  • Strong organization and time-management skills with the ability to adjust priorities as guest and operational needs change.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, including mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays based on business needs.
  • Ability to stand and walk throughout the shift and regularly bend, reach, kneel, push, pull, carry, and perform repetitive motions.
  • Ability to reach overhead and perform cleaning tasks in a variety of hotel spaces.
  • Ability to lift, carry, push, or pull up to 50 pounds as required to perform essential job duties.
