
The Public Affairs and Outreach Communication Analyst will provide planning, coordination, and analysis functions to ensure presentations, stakeholder briefings, public meetings, and outreach interactions are appropriate and effective. Services include planning, scheduling, conducting, and responding to external interactions and queries related to program performance and technical issues related to cleanup of historical contamination and legacy effects of nuclear weapons development and research at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL). The Public Affairs and Outreach Communication Analyst will evaluate public and external stakeholder interest in environmental remediation program initiatives and elements, and develop media packages, presentations, communications materials and other initiatives to understand how the public and interested groups view the cleanup program and support its efforts. This position requires regular interactions with senior DOE Environmental Management Los Alamos (EM-LA) federal staff and contractors to ensure messaging aligns with National policies and priorities, and includes updates and reports related to program success and challenges. The Public Affairs and Outreach Communication Analyst will tailor digital media content, architecture, and functionality for two public websites that present EM-LA programs. This position will provide key expertise and direction e on updates for the EM-LA program website and the Northern New Mexico Citizens’ Advisory Board (NNMCAB) website in alignment with DOE EM Headquarters to make them more informative and interactive to external audiences, and to more effectively highlight specific campaign accomplishments, announcements, press releases, educational resources, etc.
This position will work directly with senior Federal Program and senior EM-LA Public Affairs personnel to anticipate public reactions to program challenges and complications to implement a clear and effective communication strategy for “staying ahead” of the issue and any consequences. The response may include media holding statements, FAQs, fact sheets, press releases, and media inquiry follow up, and orchestration of technical expert presentations to explain root causes and steps to address or mitigate. This response planning includes interactions and comment disposition with the DOE Communications and External Affairs Office in Washington, DC, and regularly involves special knowledge and experience of media personnel who may not be supportive of the DOE or defense programs that created the legacy waste at Los Alamos.
In addition to public affairs and outreach responsibilities, the position provides technical editing and writing support to ensure all program documents, presentations, correspondence, and public-facing materials are accurate, clearly written, and aligned with DOE and EM‑LA standards. This includes reviewing and refining technical content for clarity and consistency, coordinating with subject matter experts to validate information, and ensuring all materials meet required formatting, quality, and controlled‑document requirements. The Analyst maintains revision histories, supports document workflows, and ensures content is accessible and understandable to both technical and non‑technical audiences.
