The Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP-BC) or Certified Psychiatric Physician Assistant (PA) provides behavioral health evaluation, diagnosis, treatment, and medication management services within Proactive MD employer-sponsored health centers. This role functions as part of an integrated care model focused on improving access to behavioral healthcare while supporting the physical, emotional, and psychosocial well-being of patients.
The provider collaborates closely with psychiatrists, therapists, primary care providers, patient advocates, and interdisciplinary care teams to deliver evidence-based behavioral healthcare in a patient-centered outpatient environment.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
• Perform psychiatric and behavioral health assessments
• Diagnose and manage common behavioral health conditions
• Develop and implement individualized treatment plans
• Prescribe and manage psychotropic medications in accordance with state regulations and scope of practice
• Provide follow-up care and ongoing medication management
• Collaborate with psychiatrists and supervising/collaborating physicians as required
• Coordinate care with primary care providers, therapists, and care teams
• Support behavioral health integration within primary care workflows
• Educate patients regarding medications, treatment expectations, lifestyle modifications, and coping strategies
• Maintain accurate and timely EMR documentation
• Participate in quality improvement activities and clinical team meetings
• Identify and appropriately escalate psychiatric crises or safety concerns
• Support organizational initiatives related to patient access, quality, and behavioral health outcomes
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE
PMHNP Candidates - Required Qualifications
• Master’s or Doctoral degree in Nursing from an accredited program
• Completion of an accredited Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner training program
• Certification as a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner Board Certified (PMHNP-BC)
• Successful completion of national board certification examination through the American Nurses Credentialing Center
• Active unrestricted APRN license in applicable state(s)
• DEA registration and controlled substance prescribing authority as applicable
PMHNP Candidates - Preferred Qualifications
• Experience in outpatient psychiatry, integrated behavioral health, collaborative care, or primary care behavioral health
• Minimum of 2 years psychiatric or behavioral health experience
PA Candidates - Required Qualifications
• Graduate of an accredited Physician Assistant program
• NCCPA certification
• Certificate of Added Qualifications (CAQ) in Psychiatry
• Active unrestricted PA license in applicable state(s)
• DEA registration and controlled substance prescribing authority as applicable
PA Candidates - Preferred Qualifications
• Minimum of 2 years psychiatric or behavioral health experience
• Experience in outpatient psychiatry, integrated behavioral health, collaborative care, or primary care behavioral health
Preferred Qualifications (PMHNP & PA candidates)
• Experience with employer-sponsored healthcare, population health, or value-based care models
• Experience with telehealth behavioral health services
• Familiarity with integrated behavioral health workflows
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES
• Strong psychiatric assessment and medication management skills
• Ability to work independently while collaborating within a multidisciplinary care team
• Excellent communication and patient engagement skills
• Understanding of integrated behavioral health and population health principles
• Strong organizational and documentation skills
• Ability to manage sensitive and confidential information professionally
