Cypress Hills Local Development Corporation has an opening for a part time Assistant Cook in the United Community Centers Early Learning Center Program. The primary responsibility for this position is the preparation and serving of all meals and snacks in the early learning program and maintaining the kitchen in a sanitary and efficient condition.

Principal Duties

  • Follows individual work schedule provided by the Director, in consultation with the Culinary Supervisor, to indicate specific responsibilities and the time scheduled for them.
  • Cooperates in total staff effort designed to improve the center's services.
  • Participates in periodic individual conferences and regular staff meetings as scheduled by the Culinary Supervisor. Meeting topics will include:
  • Any planned program events or changes that affect kitchen staff and their responsibilities
  • In the event of policy changes or regulations that may affect budgetary needs for food and supplies or rearrangement of space
  • Participation in staff parties and attendance in parents' meetings are also encouraged but not required
  • Works with the Culinary Supervisor to ensure that all food handling services are of the highest quality.
  • Maintains a minimum of 15 hours per year in professional development and in-service training. Training will primarily address the functions related to food service and working with children.

SPECIFIC DUTIES

  • Under the supervision of the Culinary Supervisor, the cook will carry out the following functions in accordance with the work schedule provided by the program director:
  • Food
  • Prepare, cook and service food according to recommended practices set by USDA, CACFP, DOH
  • Follow weekly menus made in consultation with the program director and Culinary Supervisor. Confer with the Culinary Supervisor when menu changes are indicated, i.e., necessary substitution or the use of-leftovers.
  • Appropriate allocation of portions of food for children's groups according to need and regulation
  • Recognize by face, any child or staff in the program with an allergy or food restriction.
  • Make appropriate substitutions for allergies and/or food restrictions.
  • Use effective and secure practices in data collection and management to contribute to accurate reporting of kitchen practices including ordering of kitchen food and non-food products, meal preparation and distribution.
  • Perform other duties as assigned as necessary for the success of the nutritional needs of the program.
  • Housekeeping
  • Wash dishes and utensils according to sanitary practices.
  • Keep kitchen and storeroom in a clean, sanitary and orderly condition, i.e., range sink, refrigerator and cupboards.
  • Keep kitchen equipment and utensils in good condition.
  • Place kitchen garbage in designated covered receptacles daily.
  • Demonstrates commitment to leadership development, community building, and community organizing as strategies for social change.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Position Requirements

  • Must possess Food Handling and Protection certifications.
  • Previous related experience in food preparation (preferably in large quantities), dishwashing and housekeeping.
  • Ability to read and write in order to follow and prepare written menus, recipes and work schedules.
  • Ability to maintain cooperative relationships with other staff, children, parents and visitors of the center.
  • Must clear DOE and DOHMH fingerprinting and background requirements.

Supervision

Reports directly to the UCC Early Learning Center Program Director.

Compensation

  • This position is hourly for 12 - 14 hours per week, Monday - Friday.
  • $18.00 per hour.
  • Access to professional development provided by CHLDC and/or external providers.
  • All part-time employees are eligible to participate in the agency’s 403b Tax Deferred Retirement Investment Plan.
  • In addition, all part-time employees are eligible to participate in the agency’s Commuter Flexible Spending Plan.
  • CHLDC also follows the New York City Earned Sick Time Act.

Work Environment:The position works in a school setting during the workday. This role routinely uses standard industrial kitchen equipment.

The employee frequently is required to stand; walk; and stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. The employee is occasionally required to sit and climb or balance. The employee must regularly lift and/or move objects up to 40 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
