Job Description

We are seeking a clinical psychologist to join our expanding Adult Outpatient Psychiatry and Behavioral Health service. At Stony Brook University Hospital, we provide comprehensive, evidence-based mental health services across the lifespan, to a diverse population with a wide range of clinical presentations and psychosocial needs. Ideal candidates will be committed to delivering high-quality, patient-centered care, and having a desire to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary environment to advance health equity by improving access to behavioral health services for the communities we serve.

Our Behavioral Health clinicians work within the Adult Outpatient Division, providing psychological evaluations, individual and group therapy, and consultations to patients. These services are provided in our ambulatory outpatient psychiatry and behavioral health clinics in close collaboration with psychiatrists, nurse practitioners, social workers, and case managers. The therapy services provided, cater to individuals with a variety of presenting concerns ranging from those needing interventions which are short-term goal oriented or solution focused treatments, to others needing evidence-based practices including insight-oriented treatments for more chronic mental health presentations and concerns.

The clinical psychologist will serve within our outpatient clinical services across Stony Brook Medicine locations, based on departmental needs. The clinical psychologist would also have the opportunity to join our growing integrated care program that delivers psychiatry and behavioral health care within multiple primary care settings, including: Internal Medicine, Family Medicine, Neurology, Women’s Health, and the Cancer Center.

Responsibilities include direct patient care (at least 90% effort), including diagnostic evaluations, individual and group psychotherapy; and non-clinical activities (up to 10% effort) which can include research/academic activities.

In this role, the clinical psychologist who holds the academic rank of Clinical Assistant/Associate Professor, will also have the opportunity to engage in teaching and supervision of psychology externs, interns, postdoctoral fellows, as well as psychiatry residents and fellows, and medical students. Working on research-related or scholarly projects is encouraged. While not a required component for this role, engaging in scholarly activity and research leads to a path for academic promotion.

FLEXIBLE: Full-Time schedule totaling forty hours 5 days per week, including the possibility of evening hours; hybrid work schedule including appointments via telehealth.

*Please note: The telehealth policy could be subject to change by Stony Brook University and Stony Brook Hospital if needed. Per Stony Brook Hospital’s policies, Psychologists and patients must be located in New York State.

Why work here? Build a meaningful career where your work truly matters. At Stony Brook Medicine, you’ll practice in a collaborative, multidisciplinary academic setting while enjoying the stability of a SUNY pension, excellent benefits, and generous time off. We are committed to supporting work-life balance, fostering professional development, and empowering clinicians to make a lasting impact on children and families in our community.
