Psychiatrist – Assessment Center

Full-Time | 37.5 hours/week | Hybrid Flexibility Available

Provide Care That Creates Stability

At BRC, our medical and behavioral health teams provide critical care to some of New York City’s most vulnerable individuals. As a Psychiatrist at the Assessment Center, you will deliver psychiatric evaluation, treatment, crisis intervention, and clinical leadership for individuals newly entering the shelter system.

This role is ideal for a mission-driven physician interested in collaborative, community-based psychiatry serving individuals experiencing homelessness, mental illness, substance use, medical fragility, and justice-system involvement.

What You’ll Do

  • Conduct psychiatric evaluations, assessments, and treatment planning
  • Provide crisis intervention and ongoing psychiatric care
  • Co-manage care alongside medical and interdisciplinary teams
  • Oversee and support Psychiatric Nurse Practitioners (PNPs), Registered Nurses (RNs), and Medical Assistants
  • Support psychiatric consultation needs across additional BRC program locations as needed
  • Advocate for clients with hospitals, community providers, and external partners
  • Build collaborative relationships with hospital ERs, CPEPs, and referral partners
  • Provide training and guidance to social workers and frontline staff
  • Participate in multidisciplinary meetings, case conferences, and care planning
  • Maintain timely documentation and compliance standards

Program Overview

The Assessment Center is a 200-bed shelter in Greenpoint, Brooklyn serving men newly entering the NYC shelter system who require comprehensive medical and psychiatric evaluation before placement into the most appropriate level of care and shelter.

Clients served may include individuals experiencing chronic mental illness, substance use disorders, medical complexity, developmental disabilities, homelessness, and justice-system involvement.

Who We’re Looking For

  • Board Certified or Board Eligible Psychiatrist required
  • Experience working with MICA, forensic, homeless, or severely mentally ill populations preferred
  • Strong clinical assessment, crisis management, and collaboration skills
  • Interest in working with vulnerable and high-needs populations required
  • Flexible, creative, and mission-driven approach to care

Working Environment

This role involves direct clinical work with individuals experiencing homelessness, mental illness, substance use disorders, and complex medical and psychosocial needs. Employees must be comfortable:

  • Working in shelter and community-based environments
  • Managing psychiatric crises and high-acuity cases
  • Collaborating across multidisciplinary teams and multiple program locations
  • Supporting clients with significant behavioral health and psychosocial challenges

Schedule

  • Full-time, 37.5 hours/week
  • Monday–Friday, 9:00 AM – 5:30 PM
  • Hybrid flexibility available
