Qualifications
High School Diploma or GED (Required)
Vocational / Technical Degree in Patient Care Assistance, Emergency Medicine (Preferred)

Work Experience
Minimum of 1 year direct patient care experience in a hospital setting (Required)
In lieu of experience, graduate of an accredited Emergency Medical Technician program

Licenses and Certifications
Required Certifications/Licensures:
Georgia certification as an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) or Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA)
AHA Basic Life Support (BLS)
Crisis Response Training required within 6 months of hire.

Essential Functions
EC TECHNICIAN PATIENT CARE RESPONSIBILITIES:
Assists nurse with providing direct care to EC patients.
Comply with established nursing standards.
Maintain established department, unit, hospital policies, procedures, objectives, quality assurance, safety, environmental and infection control.
Follow established routines and utilize supplies and equipment in a cost-effective manner.
Maintain a clean, orderly, safe environment for patients and personnel.
Receive assignment and assist in care of patients as directed.
Assist physicians, physician extenders and nursing personnel during assessment, reassessment and treatment of emergency patients. Complete regularly required rounding and assessments on assigned patients.
Report and update physician and (or) nurse and document patient information in the medical record.
Check and record patient's vital signs, communicate with Registered Nurse and EC Physician regarding patient status/update.
Direct patient care responsibilities include but are not limited to: Application of patient monitoring systems including basic interpretation and reporting, basic extremity splinting, assist with cast application, crutch fitting, point of care testing/maintenance, obtain and report results of 12 lead ECG tracings, specimen collection, labeling and transport, trauma team assignment, application and maintenance of basic spinal immobilization, resuscitation team assignment, urinary catheter placement/maintenance, oxygen therapy application and removal, perform, report and record visual acuity eye exams, phlebotomy, wound care/dressings, proactive patient procedure/intervention to include patient preparation, equipment set up and assistance/support to Physician/Nurse.
Work directly with Flow Coordinator/zone nurse in managing patient throughput in all clinical areas.
Perform clerical support functions to include computer/manual diagnostic order entry, complete and log consult physician pages, perform inpatient bed request/assignment and communication, monitor and direct response to unit based nurse call communication system.

Demonstrates technical skill in using equipment appropriate for role.

Maintains equipment in working order. Troubleshoots equipment problems.
Uses technology to increase productivity. Adapts to new technology

Documents and submits required information and data in a timely fashion.
Clearly and accurately documents designated processes, policies, products, service offerings, etc.
Ensures that documentation is tailored to expected readers / users.
Uses correct terminology.
Conforms to required style and format.

Treats patients and families with compassion and implements plan of care.
Bases care decisions on plan of care.
Monitors and documents patient response.
Establishes rapport with clients. Adapts communication style, listens and responds to patient needs.

Supports social, spiritual, and cultural needs of patients and families.
Manages difficult or emotional patient situations.

Additional Duties
Adheres to the hospital and departmental attendance and punctuality guidelines.
Performs all job responsibilities in alignment with the core values, mission and vision of the organization.
Performs other duties as required and completes all job functions as per departmental policies and procedures.
Maintains current knowledge in present areas of responsibility (i.e., self education, attends ongoing educational programs).
Attends staff meetings and completes mandatory in-services and requirements and competency evaluations on time.
Demonstrates competency at all levels in providing care to all patients based on age, sex, weight, and demonstrated needs.

For non-clinical areas, has attended training and demonstrates usage of age- specific customer service skills.
Wears protective clothing and equipment as appropriate.
