Job Summary
This position is based at the University Medical Center, a level 1 trauma center environment which is nationally ranked and recognized for academic research, quality standards and overall patient experience. Security Dispatchers are responsible for providing dispatch services for multiple University of Utah Health facilities.

The incumbent uses multi-line telephone and computer systems to receive and relay information to the appropriate units and Security Teams, then creates and logs incident details using electronic dispatch systems.


Responsibilities
Job Responsibilities:
  • Answer and triage emergency and non-emergency calls from staff, patients, and visitors
  • Operate and maintain proficiency with radio systems, telephone systems, dispatch software and security technologies
  • Maintain working knowledge of hospital and clinic geography, unit designations, critical care areas and access routes
  • Dispatch security personnel and coordinate response based on priority, location, and available resources
  • Maintain real-time situational awareness of hospital operations, incidents, and officer activity across multiple facilities
  • Monitor CCTV, alarms, access control systems, and life safety systems; initiate appropriate response
  • Support emergency operations, including hospital codes, lockdowns, and critical incidents
  • Serve as the central communication hub between security, clinical staff, leadership, and external emergency services
  • Document incidents, dispatch activity, and communications accurately in CADdispatch systems
  • Provide clear, concise radio and phone communication, including management of emergency radio traffic
  • Follow established protocols for incident escalation, emergency notifications, and system downtime procedures
  • Maintain professionalism, composure, and strong customer service in high-stress situations
  • Ensure confidentiality and compliance with HIPAA and organizational policies
  • Participate in required training, drills, and certification programs (including IAHSS Basic Certification)


Minimum Qualifications
• High school diploma, GED or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience).
• Ability to successfully pass a background check
• Demonstrated communications skills and a commitment to providing excellent customer service
• A valid Utah Driver’s License to be obtained within 6 months of hire.

  • Excellent customer service and communication skills required with a speaking voice that is clear and easily understood.
  • The ability to think quickly and clearly under stressful situations, establishing priorities and passing on information as needed.
  • Critical thinking skills and good judgement under pressure. Must be capable of reacting logically to unusual situations.
  • The ability to work at a fast pace and make swift decisions to facilitate effective and efficient communication during stressful and emergency events.
  • Ability to multi-task and work with frequent interruption.
  • Detailed information gathering and writing skills. Excellent spelling and grammar.
  • Ability to work shift work includes weekends, holidays, and extended shifts. Shifts are subject to change with or without notice.
