Job Summary
The South Main Clinic at the University of Utah School of Medicine has an immediate opening for a Medical Assistant that shares our vision and passion for caring for children and their families. The Medical Assistant plays a critical role in facilitating the efficient delivery of patient care, supporting the professional role of the licensed staff, and providing support and assistance as directed by licensed staff in rendering basic healthcare to patients.

This position is located at the Department of Pediatrics South Main Clinic on 3690 South Main Street, Salt Lake City, Utah.

Responsibilities
This position is patient-sensitive and must fulfill all associated requirements. We protect our patients, coworkers and community by requiring all patient-sensitive employees to be immunized according to CDC standards and hospital policy. Limited exemptions may be made for documented medical contraindications or religious beliefs that object to vaccinations.

Applicants must demonstrate the potential ability to perform the essential functions of the job as outlined in the position description.

Essential Functions
  1. Prepares patients for examinations and diagnostic procedures according to clinic procedures such as recording temperatures, pulse rate, pulse oximetry, blood pressure and responses to standardized medical history questions.
  2. Completes patient admission or registration process by reviewing accounts and other compliance-related documents for completeness and accuracy. Obtains and documents missing information required for completion of the registration.
  3. Reports all observed patient concerns and changes in condition to a licensed staff member.
  4. Schedules patient appointments; contacts patients for rescheduling, missed appointments and appointment reminders.
  5. Performs Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments ( CLIA) Waived Lab tests such as urine dip stick, Hgb, Hct, finger stick, glucose, hemoccults and reports results to the appropriate personnel.
  6. Performs specialty skills such as suture removal, straight catheterization and injections (IM, SQ and intradermal).
  7. May perform patient phlebotomy in accordance with clinic procedures and physician orders
  8. Acts as a chaperone for health care providers during patient examination as requested and assists with procedures.
  9. Monitors and cleans assigned patient examination rooms, unit areas and unit equipment reporting outdated supplies and necessary equipment repairs.
  10. Answers telephones, forwards telephone messages and under the direction of licensed staff, schedules appointments, procedures and diagnostic tests. Assists in routine clerical functions such as filing of medical information in patient’s records, obtaining medical records from other providers and entering charges for billing purposes.
  11. Attends and completes mandatory in-services including electronic medical record, HIPPA, infection control, safety, CPR, equipment usage and procedures according to hospital and department policies.
  12. May apply leads and monitor for diagnostic procedures such as EKG and ultrasound scan under the direct supervision of licensed personnel.
  13. May assist inpatient and family education by providing educational material and general health information to patients and family members.

Incumbents face exposure to potentially dangerous contaminated bodily fluids, blood, used needles and other contaminants as part of the daily hazards of the job. The physical demand of being on your feet for long periods of time, of moving and lifting patients and of reaching for and handling equipment are common elements of the job.

The staff member must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served on his or her assigned unit. The individual must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of life span growth and development and the ability to assess data regarding the patient’s status and provide care as described in the department’s policies and procedures manual.

Minimum Qualifications
Required:

  • Current RQI Healthcare Provider eCredential through the University of Utah Health RQI system. The eCredential is to be obtained within 30 days of hire


  • Verifiable completion of one (1) of the following:
  1. State approved EMT course.
  2. One (1) year of Medical Assistant experience in an ambulatory care clinic or other healthcare setting.
  3. Medical Assisting education program.
  4. University Hospital Medical Assistant certification program.

Preferences
Department Specific Preferences
  • Fluency in Spanish, both oral and written.
  • Two years of related work experience in community-based pediatrics or primary care setting.
  • Strong computer skills, excellent ability to multi-task, and ability to effectively and independently manage time.
  • Completion of an accredited Medical Assisting Program or equivalent ( EMT).
