What you will do:

This role sits within the Global Regulatory Policy and Advisory (GRP&A) team, which establishes HSBC’s interpretations of prudential requirements under regulations implementing Basel standards across jurisdictions. The position focuses primarily on European prudential rules.

You’ll maintain and develop part of the policy interpretation library, provide detailed analysis on the regulatory treatment of products and transactions, and act as a subject matter expert (SME) on capital, risk-weighted assets (RWAs) and leverage to support a broad range of stakeholders.

In this role you will:

• Build and maintain deep knowledge of applicable prudential rules (e.g., CRR, EBA technical standards, ECB guides) and identify areas requiring interpretation.
• Draft regulatory policy interpretations and opinions that are robust and defensible with regulators, and progress them through the appropriate governance committee for approval.
• Perform detailed prudential reviews as part of New Product Due Diligence (e.g., Banking Book vs Trading Book, RWAs across risk types).
• Review strategic, material and/or complex transactions and advise the business on regulatory impacts, considering prudential constraints and the evolving regulatory landscape.
• Contribute to identifying upcoming changes to prudential rules and preparing regulatory briefings, responsibly leveraging HSBC’s AI capabilities where appropriate.
• Review regulatory consultations and engage stakeholders (including industry groups) to formulate responses when required.

You should apply if you have:

• A general understanding of banking, financial risks, prudential constraints and balance sheet dynamics.
• Knowledge of Basel-led prudential frameworks and the EU prudential regulatory framework.
• Proven expertise in at least one of: regulatory own funds and eligible liabilities; capital requirements for credit risk; counterparty credit risk. Experience in additional prudential areas (e.g., market risk, liquidity risk, IRRBB, IRB/IMM models or securitisations) would be highly valued.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, including assessing merits and risks of alternative regulatory interpretations.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills in English, including drafting formal policy papers and presenting recommendations to senior management.
• Ability to deliver to agreed timelines in collaboration with stakeholders across an international team, with consistent high-quality outputs (including responsible use of AI capabilities).
