Chevron Services Company is accepting applications for the position of Property Tax Representative. The person serving in this position will support the valuation, compliance, and appeal of complex real and personal property assets across multiple U.S. jurisdictions. This role will serve as a primary point of contact with state, county, and local taxing authorities and will work closely with business units, accounting, legal, and operations teams to ensure accurate reporting and to minimize property tax exposure. The role is based in Houston and will report to a Houston-based Manager in Chevron’s Corporate Tax group.
Key Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Prepare, review, and file property tax returns and associated reports for complex assets, including refineries, industrial facilities, corporate office buildings, inventories, pipelines, and specialty assets.
Develop property tax valuation positions using accepted appraisal methodologies and financial analysis; document opinions of value and contest assessed values when appropriate. Identify and quantify obsolescence to reduce tax burden.
Manage property tax appeals and negotiate valuations and settlements with state, county, and local taxing authorities. Represent the company in administrative hearings and meetings. Assist with managing outside counsel and experts in developing appeal and litigation strategy.
Serve as the primary liaison with taxing authorities, internal business units, and third-party advisors on property tax matters. Provide audit support as needed.
Analyze tax authority assessments, rules, regulations, and applicable laws to identify compliance risks and tax savings opportunities.
Collaborate with Corporate Affairs, business units, and trade associations to reduce tax exposure or administrative burden.
Support internal process improvements related to valuations, returns, payments, and data quality, including coordination with tax systems and application specialists.
Provide technical guidance on property tax matters to internal stakeholders, including implications for new projects, asset changes, or operational updates. Demonstrate ability to analyze case law and tax laws to support valuation positions and appeals.
Travel is required.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Economics, Engineering, Business, or a related field.
10+ years of demonstrated experience in property tax compliance, valuation, or appeals for industrial or commercial properties with a specialization in domestic oil and gas operations.
Working knowledge of property appraisal concepts and valuation methodologies.
Ability to interpret property tax statutes, regulations, and assessment practices across U.S. jurisdictions.
Strong analytical, communication, negotiation, and digital skills.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience supporting large, multi-jurisdictional property tax portfolios.
Prior interaction with county assessors, appraisal districts, or administrative appeal boards.
Familiarity with tax or financial systems used for property tax reporting and valuation including Avalara APT, SAP, and PowerBI.
CMI, CPA, MAI, ASA, MBA, appraisal designation, or progress toward a relevant professional certification.
