DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

This position oversees the coordination, general administrative, review and technical support activities to review plans submitted requesting excavation(s) within the City of Houston’s right-of-way. The permit request and the plans must be in compliance with all City of Houston ordinances.

Key Responsibilities

  • Review and Approve Street Cut Permit Applications.
  • Directs personnel in the review of Street Cut permit requests.
  • Reviews engineering plan and profile for accuracy and compliance with City of Houston ordinances and design.
  • Handles inquiries from the general public and staff personnel.
  • Serves as a liaison to departments, agencies, developers, and contractors.
  • Assist customers with questions concerning their permit request and plans.
  • Coordinates and monitors equipment and system repair.
  • Assists supervisors in completing special assignments.

WORKING CONDITIONS

The position occasionally requires stooping or bending. Occasional very light lifting, such as three or four reams of papers or books (up to 20 pounds or an equivalent weight) may be required.

This is a Department of Houston Public Works position at the Tier III Level.

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS

Requires an Associate's degree in Engineering, Drafting, Designing or a closely related field.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

Four years of related experience, such as surveying, engineering, drafting and/or designing, are required.

Substitution: A Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Drafting, Design or a closely related field may be substituted for the education and two years of the experience requirement.

Directly related professional experience may be substituted for the education requirement on a year-for-year basis.

LICENSE REQUIREMENTS

May require a valid Texas driver's license and compliance with the City of Houston's policy on driving.

Qualifications

**Preference shall be given to eligible veteran applicants provided such persons possess the qualifications necessary for competent discharge of the duties involved in the position applied for, such persons are among the most qualified candidates for the position, and all other factors in accordance with Executive Order 1-6.**
