Skills Development and Employment ensures that people with disabilities find and keep meaningful jobs by matching them with employers seeking qualified job candidates. In addition, they offer support with assessments, rehabilitation and child and youth programs.

Opportunity
The Skills Trainer provides individualized support for Project SEARCH interns and helps them acquire competitive and marketable skills.  In collaboration with the teacher/business liaison provided by the school board, the Skills Trainer supports with identifying and developing internships that offer a variety of opportunities to build marketable, competitive skills that lead to employment.

Responsibilities
• Collaborate and communicate effectively with Project SEARCH Instructor, internship department managers/mentors, co-workers, family members, School Board of personnel and Project SEARCH management.
• Identify and implement training strategies and/or services in coordination with the Project SEARCH instructor and host business staff.
• In coordination with the instructor and business liaison, identify and develop internship sites that offer a variety of opportunities to build marketable, competitive skills that lead to employment.
• Consult with host business department employees on tools and techniques that support intern learning and success.
• Training tasks using systematic instruction techniques.
• Develop task analysis to support the intern to learn and perform to required productivity and quality standards.
• Learn the site culture, rules and expectations within each department and assist interns to understand and comply.
• Support with any accessibility and accommodation needs, ensuring that the MODC accommodation policies are adhered to.
• Participating in training interns in grooming, hygiene, communication, interviewing, and work/social behavior as they relate to successful employment.
• Assess interns progress and give feedback to interns and team members.
• Ensure compliance and adhere to all laws, regulations, as well as internal MODC policies and procedures.
• Complete reports, case noting, and assessments as required.
• Assist with completing tools such as the VocFit Assessment to determine the abilities of the intern, the demands of the internship tasks, and help the team to make meaningful internship matches.
• Facilitate ongoing communication with all members of the steering committee to
• ensure interns progress, challenges or changes to the model fidelity are communicated.

Qualifications
• Degree or diploma in Social Services, Developmental Service Worker, or other relevant education.
• Minimum of 1 year of experience with training/coaching, systematic instruction, job, and task analysis.
• Experience in employment counseling is considered an asset.
• A valid driver’s license and use of car is necessary.
• Strong organizational skills, self-directedness and initiative when given a variety of responsibilities and assigned tasks.
• Ability to make decisions and problem solve with a team of service providers.
• Effective interpersonal communication skills which promote personal relationships with interns, families, UofG, Project SEARCH team members, and partner agencies.
• Computer literate (MS Office 2000 and Windows).

Salary: $26.67 per hour

About March of Dimes Canada

In 1949, desperate to find a cure and protect their children from polio, mothers across Canada joined in a North America-wide fundraising effort, going door to door in their own neighbourhoods to collect dimes.

The sheer scope of the campaign led entertainer Eddie Cantor to suggest the name "March of Dimes"​, based on the song "Brother can you spare a dime?"​ produced during the Great Depression.

By 1951 the Canadian Foundation for Poliomyelitis was established and granted use of the name "Ontario March of Dimes."​

In 1955, after the polio vaccine created by Dr. Jonas Salk proved effective in limited test trials, laboratories rushed to manufacture the vaccine, including Connaught Laboratories (now sanofi pasteur) in Toronto, Canada.

With the threat of polio greatly diminished, the March of Dimes in Canada began funding centres for people who had already contracted the disease, with early programs focused mostly on rehabilitation and job training.

By the early 1960s, the organization had grown in both size and mandate, shifting considerably to serve the broader needs of all adults with physical disabilities. In Ontario the legal name of the organization was changed to the Rehabilitation Foundation for the Disabled.

In 2006, Ontario March of Dimes registered the operating name of March of Dimes Canada. Today, March of Dimes is dedicated to helping children and adults across Canada to lead more independent lives.
