The Technical Safety department is responsible for the safety of the products and project solutions developed and deployed by the Urban Rail Signaling business line and compliance to safety principles, industry specific standards and best practices for the development of safety-critical systems.
The Project Safety Manager coordinates the Technical Safety activities for products/projects so that the solutions (whether for testing or deployment to a customer for trial operations or revenue) are safe for their intended scope and purpose and is responsible for demonstrating that the solutions comply with the relevant processes, policies, legislation, standards and regulations.
Key Accountabilities
Prepares safety plans and safety cases (generic product/generic application/specific application, design and implementation, according to the defined scope) to demonstrate that the solution is safe for its intended purpose
Is part of the project core team and the interface with senior management
Interfaces with ISA and customer (involves technical safety experts as needed), defines follow-up action plans and ensures execution to close the eventual findings
Defines, identifies and coordinates the project safety team to implement the safety strategy
Ensures that all delivered solutions meet both the company safety requirements and the contractual safety requirements
Ensures the execution of project safety activities through schedule, critical path management and risk/opportunity management for delivery within scope, budget and on time
Manages and anticipates team workload demand according to project needs and manages allocated resources executing product/project hazard and safety analysis activities with support from other Technical Safety disciplines’ people managers
Enforces the company Technical Safety processes and guarantees adherence to the project safety plan
Supervises Technical Safety analyses, design reviews, RAM and Hazard Log management with support from other Technical Safety disciplines’ people managers
Anticipates and escalates technical issues and/or resource issues on projects
Key Requirements
B.Sc. in Electronics, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering/equivalent or Business domain with demonstrated experience in the Technical area
Minimum 10 years of experience in a senior technical role in train control systems or automation in other industries such as aerospace, defense, automotive, medical or nuclear
Good understanding of systems engineering, software engineering and functional safety
Detailed knowledge of system safety lifecycle, safety design concepts and risk analysis
Demonstrated experience with: System Safety, Validation, Safety Planning, Safety Approval and Certification, RAMT Engineering, Software Safety Assessment, Hazard Management, Safety Case
Demonstrated ability to lead and coordinate technical staff
Strong MS Office skills and Project Management tools & software
Good technical writing skills, excellent communication and analytical skills; excellent command of the English language, both written and oral
Preferred Qualifications
M.Sc. in Electronics, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering or equivalent
Knowledge of railway signaling systems, train control systems, fixed and moving block signaling principles, relay-based and/or computer-based interlocking design
Extensive experience with safety standards (CENELEC, IEC, IEEE, MIL), best practices, safety methods and techniques (HAZID, HAZOP, PHA, SHA, OSHA, FTA, FMEA/FMECA, FSA) and hazard management
Working knowledge of Communications-Based Train Control (CBTC) and/or Solid-State Interlocking (SSI)
Member of Professional Engineer of Ontario (PEO) or Institution of Railway Signal Engineers (IRSE)
Total Compensation Range (Base Salary + Annual Incentive plan) : $150,028-$190,536
