  • Discuss problems of practice with colleagues
  • Explore readings, podcasts, videos, and resources
  • Collaboratively plan instruction focused on MLs' language and literacy development goals
  • Try out new instructional strategies and collect classroom evidence of student learning
  • Identify ways to refine your practices to better support multilingual learners
  • Project RESPECT
  • Rural Educators Self-Reflecting and Practicing Equity-Centered Teaching with English Learners

What is Project RESPECT?

This is a free professional learning project that is designed to support educators in teaching multilingual learners through instructional and collaborative practices that support language and literacy development.

This project will provide:

  • Tools, support, and guidance for building an inquiry group in your setting
  • Opportunity for facilitators to connect with each other
  • Student engagement strategies
  • Support for engaging families
  • Professional collaboration
  • Leadership development
  • Professional development artifacts
  • Classroom resources
  • A Certificate of completion for each participant who completes the pilot

When will this project take place?

The project will take place over SY27 from Fall of 2026 through Spring of 2027.

Who will be involved in my school/district?

  • MLL Teachers/Specialists
  • Instructional Coaches
  • General Education Teachers
  • Special Education Teachers
  • Support Staff
  • Building Leadership
  • Any/all educators who support MLLs within your LEA

How will educators engage in this project?

During SY27, LEA teams will engage in professional learning as well as collect student data (including benchmark assessments and surveys).

Participate in a total of 20 hours of learning over the course of a year

  • In-person session with Facilitator for Program Launch
  • 3 inquiry cycles that feature:
  • In-person PLCs (1-2 per cycle) focusing on:
  • Engaging MLLs in Interactive Learning
  • Literacy and language development with a focus on reading
  • Literacy and language development with a focus on writing
  • Online learning through modules
  • End of program focus group

Reflect on asset-based approaches to supporting ML students and families

  • Discuss problems of practice with colleagues
  • Explore readings, podcasts, videos, and resources
  • Collaboratively plan instruction focused on MLs' language and literacy development goals
  • Try out new instructional strategies and collect classroom evidence of student learning
  • Identify ways to refine your practices to better support multilingual learners

Salary and Benefits: $800 - Stipend
